Polson whips Whitefish

WHITEFISH – The Polson softball team strengthened its grip on the No. 2 spot in the Northwestern A standings Tuesday with a 22-0 blowout victory over Whitefish.

The win improves the Pirates’ league record to 5-2, trailing only the spotless 6-0 mark that Frenchtown holds. Polson leads third-place Libby (3-3) by a game and a half and the teams will end their conference slate together. Polson travels to Libby on Friday.

The Pirates won the only other meeting between the two this spring, an 8-2 decision in Polson that snapped Libby’s seven-game win streak to open the season.

On Tuesday, Jaylin Kenney set the pace for Polson (15-3 overall) by batting 4 for 6 out of the leadoff spot. Jessica Bagnell, who pitched for the victory, was 3 for 4 and Lydia Dupuis was also 3 for 5.

Bagnell limited Whitefish (0-7, 2-17) to four hits.

*STAT SPEC ANOMALY NOTES:
top2nd, 2ndAB - Bitterman 2B double credit rescinded to 1B single plus error by outfielder on account of misplay.  Ball ticked the glove of outfielder upon descent, which provides legitimate case for some evaluators to score play exclusively as an error.  But Polson coaching staff as well as manner in which play was evaluated by Whitefish statistician  concur that the play warranted being considered a hit, just not a double even though batter ended up on second base.
• Toth hit in the gap between first base and second base beat out the infield coverage on account of trajectory quality and base-running afterburner speed, rather than due to any deficiency on the part of the infielder attempting to make a play that would have been too late.
• Discrepancies between at-bat numeration reported in this presentation that deviate from those reported in newspaper coverage are provided in parenthesis ( ).  Most can be attributed to play evaluations being scored as fielder’s choice (FC) and/or error (E), while pinch hitters batting in stead of starters likewise skew the batter stats.
SOURCE – data  extrapolated from Polson stat record book .  Appreciation is extended to the LP statistician for a thorough and comprehensive rendition of the game that could consulted at a later juncture in time by someone who was not in attendance like myself.  JH
