JUCO Jamborees, Jumpin Jacks & Jubiliation:
Softball “Clash of the Titans” Showdowns at the Junior College (JUCO) level involving former NWA as well as Mission Valley softball players
A synopsis of post prep softball snippets by John Heglie
This month a pair of Junior College softball versions of “Clash of the Titans” will take place between teams that either feature former Northwestern A players or other residents from the Mission Valley on their rosters.
On Friday the 18th of April, a doubleheader will take place with NWAACC East Region conference standing implications at stake when 19-4 overall Wenatchee Valley College (WVC) pays a visit over to the 18-10 overall Community Colleges of Spokane (CCS). Both teams come into the contest tied for the conference lead with identical 12-2 records. Featured among the roster of the Wenatchee Valley Knights are outfielder Ashleigh “Rocket” aka “Smashleigh” Lynch (2x all-state, 3x all-conf - 2013 Ronan graduate of the Western B-C Ronan Maidens) and infielder Kinley Pope (2012 Charlo graduate of the Western B-C Mission-Arlee-Charlo (MAC) Bulldogs). Once on base, the “Rocket” has been scorching her way around the base paths with afterburners flaring to the tune of 8 stolen bases thus far this season. Meanwhile, Pope has been supplying some pop of her own with a quintet of extra base hits to her credit. Pope and Lynch batting statistics prior to game time are as follows:
Pope batting specs - 23gms, 71AB, 16R, 31H, (4)2B, (1)3B, 25RBI, .437AVG
Lynch batting specs - 23gms, 61AB, 25R, 22H, (2)2B, 6RBI, .361AVG, 8SB
Their team is on the road to tangle with the host Spokane Bigfoot, a squad that features the winningest pitcher in Montana prep softball in outfielder/pitcher Shalaina Duford (VB 2x all-state, 2x all-conf / SB 10U ASA 2006 state champion, 4x all-trny (2010 MVP), 3x all-state, 4x all-conf - 2013 Polson graduate). Duford hasn’t been doing much pitching thus far this season, playing mainly in the outfield. But she was able to reprise the familiar role of hurler from the mound in a recent game despite not having pitched over the course of several months. While there was no doubt some rust that had to be banged off the hinges of her game, she operated with typical Duford efficiency by inducing multiple batters into swinging at balls that produced catchable and fieldable balls for the defense behind her to put away. Whether she will be called upon to pitch in this particular contest remains to be seen, she will no doubt be up to the task of providing the visitors with a formidable opponent to contend with. Shay Duford’s numbers prior to the game are as follows:
Duford batting specs - 22gms, 64AB, 18R, 28H, (6)2B, 2HR, 18RBI, .438AVG
Duford pitching specs - 1 gm 5IP, W-L 1-0 (2K, 7H, 0W, 1HP) 2.80 ERA
Another matchup that looms on the not too distant horizon later this month entails a pair of doubleheaders on the weekend of the 26th through 27th of April between the Williston State College Tetons when they visit the Dakota College Botinneau Lumberjacks in Bottineau. Among the roster of the Williston State Tetons is former Polson Lady Pirate third base infielder
Tina Marquardt (SB all-state, 2x all-conf - 2013 Polson graduate), who has been walloping the ball as if the bar had nary been raised in these collegiate ranks from prep play. Her batting statistics prior to this showdown are comparable to those of the end of the regular scheduled number of games prep teams play prior to the state tournament.
Marquardt batting specs - 23gms, 77AB, 28R, 44H, (14)2B, 9HR, 44RBI, .571AVG
Featured among the host Lumberjack roster are former B-C Ronan Maiden Bethany Colman and former NWA Columbia Falls WildKat Kathrin Jetty. Colman is in her second season with the Jacks, having been named to the Mon-Dak all-conference team last year. Colman’s current season performance levels are as follows, although it should be recognized that weather related issues have canceled a quartet of scheduled doubleheaders and some exhibition game statistics have not been integrated into these numbers:
Colman batting specs - 10gms, 25AB, 5R, 9H, 3RBI, .360AVG.
Colman pitching specs - 3gms 17IP, W-L 1-2 (9K, 12H, 4W), 5.35ERA.
The other player on the Jacks roster who will be familiar to followers of Northwestern A softball is none other than former Columbia Falls third base infielder Kathrin Jetty (SB 3x all-conf - 2013 C Falls grad). Jetty has been performing very well, showing that the yowl of some Kats can carry their tune beyond the prep high school ranks.
Jetty batting specs - 10gms, 26AB, 7R, 13H, (2)2B, (1)3B, 2HR, 9RBI, .500AVG.
There are only two other players of NWA vintage that I am aware of who are playing softball at the collegiate level. They are second base/shortstop Renae Nelson of Columbia Falls, who currently plays with the MSU Billings Yellowjackets, and Abby Indreland of Frenchtown, who was successful in her walk-on bid to make the roster of the Utah State Aggies. On account of time limitations for research, interest in any specs on these players will have to be referred to the collegiate websites themselves. Apologies to any other players who have been overlooked on account of the lack of awareness of this writer as to their whereabouts.
