Broncs deny Maroons playoff berth
Updated: October 18, 2013 at 10:13 pm
HAMILTON — The Butte Central football team looked to wrap up a home playoff game but ran into a tough Hamilton Broncs squad who played inspired on Senior Parent Night.
The game changing play could have well been a roughing the kicker penalty against the Maroons that gave Hamilton a first and goal at the four instead of a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Broncs took advantage with a touchdown and never relinquished their two score lead on the way to a 31-21 southwestern conference win.
Hamilton got off to a quick start as senior quarterback Josh Bauder hit several long first half passes. One set up a first quarter field goal by Karill Apedaile and another was good for a 56 yard touchdown to fellow senior Kris Cleveland. Bauder also hit Cleveland for a 10-yard score following the roughing the kicker penalty.
The Maroons fought back and would cut the lead to ten on three different occasions. The first two on Danny Peoples touchdown passes and the last on a Wyatt Kingston 9 yard run late in the game.
Every time the Maroons seemed poised to come back Cleveland came up with a big play. He matched his 2 first half touchdown catches with two second half interceptions.
The first pick set the Broncs up at the Central 29 and led to a Teague Blome touchdown pass from Bauder that gave Hamilton a 31-14 lead midway through fourth 4th quarter.
The second Cleveland pick ended the ensuing Maroon drive deep in Bronc territory and iced the win.
Cleveland also scored the first points of the second half on a 38-yard bomb from Bauder, who passed for all four Bronc touchdowns. That score was of course set up by Cleveland’s 45 yard kick return to midfield to open the third quarter.
Connor McGree hauled in both of Peoples touchdown passes. Kyle Schulte intercepted Bauder late in the third but the Maroons were held on 4th and short.
Marcus Ferriter had a third down sack to end a 2nd half Hamilton drive and combined with McGree on another in the second quarter. Unfortunately the Maroons couldn’t take advantage of their chances.
“We’re disappointed,” Maroon head coach Don Peoples Jr. said after the loss, which dropped the Maroons to 2-2 in conference and 4-4 overall. “I thought our effort was good, their kids made more plays when they needed to be made and we didn’t. Their quarterback played well. We’re resilient and we will be back.”
Bauder completed 16 of 27 passes for 304 yards and four TDs. He was picked off twice, by McGree and Dalton Sessions.
Cleveland caught nine passes for 186 yards and the two scores. Blome grabbed five catches for 76 yards and two TDs.
Peoples completed 14 of 30 passes for 147 yards and the two TDs. He was picked off twice. Peoples also ran for 103 yards on seven carries.
The Maroons will wrap up their regular-season slate next Friday night at Bob Green Field, where they will celebrate their own senior parent night against Corvallis. A win will clinch a playoff berth for Butte Central.
Hamilton will look to lock up the No.2 2 seed as they travel to Stevensville in their season finale.
