Stevi surges past Hamilton

STEVENSVILLE — Zach Gavlak and Jesse Sims fueled a big first half that carried the Stevensville boys’ basketball team past Southwestern A neighbor Hamilton on Tuesday, 76-57.

Jared Schultz scored 23 points to lead the Jackets (5-0 in league play, 8-1 overall), who led 40-22 at half. Sims scored 11 of his 15 points in the first two quarters; Gavlak had 10 of his 12 points by intermission.

Kadin Beller added 13 points for Stevensville, which shot 28 for 46 (61 percent) from the floor and outscored Hamilton 18-7 at the foul line.

The Yellowjackets travel to unbeaten Missoula Hellgate on Friday.

Josh Bawder scored 15 points to lead the Broncs (2-2, 2-7), who were just 22 for 58 from the floor, or 38 percent.

Hamilton also had 10 points from Jesse Bartels.

At Frenchtown, the Class AA Knights raced to a nine-point halftime lead and then blew the game open with 19 unanswered points in the third quarter against the Class A Broncs.

Sophomore guard Devin Bray had a big night for Hellgate (7-0) with a game-high 20 points. Sophomore teammate Tres Tinkle added 10.

John Chapman and Matt Price each tallied eight points to lead Frenchtown (5-4).

At Corvallis, 17s were wild for both the Pirates and Blue Devils in the nonconference matchup, but Polson managed to cash in for the nonconference win.

Will Davey, Cedrick Earthboy and Riley Sampson tallied 17 points apiece to lead Polson in scoring.

Corvallis’ Jansen Jessop hit on two 3-pointers to boost his total to 17 points and Chase Walker added 17 for the Blue Devils who fell to 1-6 overall.

The Pirates improved to 3-4 overall.

Whitefish 61, Plains 49

At Plains, Cooper Olson scored 24 points to lead the Bulldogs to a come-from-behind win against the Horsemen in a nonconference contest.

Cooper hit on six 3-pointers in the first half, and went 6 for 6 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to help erase a four-point Plains lead.

Whitefish finished 12 for 14 from the free-throw line, all of which came in the final period.

Aaron Baker and Jeremiah Crawford finished with 16 and 13 points, respectively, for Plains, which fell to 1-8 overall. Whitefish improved to 5-3 overall.
