It was just one of those nights for the Butte Central boys’ basketball team.

The Maroons couldn’t seem to buy a bucket Thursday night as the defending Class A State champion Dillon Beavers came to town for a Southwestern A game.

The Maroons made just 2 of 20 shots from behind the 3-point line, and the unbeaten Beavers escaped the Maroon Activities Center with a 44-36 win.

“That’s hard to overcome,” BC coach Brodie Kelly said of his team’s shortcomings from 3-point land. “I didn’t think we were confident enough shooting tonight. We had some really nice inside out looks. We had a lot of drive and kick shots that were shots that we like to have. We didn’t make them.”

Kelly said the Maroons didn’t go after the stellar zone defense of the Beavers.

“They do a good job executing their zone,” he said. “We could have done a better job being aggressive and attacking the inside of it.”

Ben Folsom made 9 of 10 free throws and scored 11 points to lead the Beavers, who improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

Troy Scott scored 10 points, Boyd Jenne scored nine and Austin Carver netted seven points for the Beavers, who led after every quarter.

Nate Bolstad had another big game for the Maroons. The junior scored a game-high 18 points to reach double figures for the sixth time in seven games.

“He’s been solid,” Kelly said. “He’s got a lot of tools, a lot of different ways to score.”

Brady Tippett and Marcus Ferriter each scored six points for BC. Kale Guldseth and Connor McGree both scored three. Danny Peoples and Emmett McCarthy also played for the Maroons, who fell to 4-3 and 2-2.

The Maroons, still had a chance to win the game late. BC pulled to as close as 39-34 with just over a minute to play.

“We looked nervous shooting the ball tonight,” Kelly said. “We had a number of chances to cut the lead to three or four points late in the game with looks that we’ve been making this year. We just didn’t knock them down.”

The Maroons head to Livingston for a non-conference game on Saturday.
