STATE A SOCCER PLAYOFFS: Libby girls make title gameBy the Missoulian | Posted: Saturday, October 24, 2009 11:30 pm

TROY - For the first time in school history, the Libby girls' soccer team is headed to the Class A state championship match.

Jaime Gilden scored two goals for the Loggers and Anna Valentine assisted on both as they boosted their record to 13-0. They will play host to Billings Central, the team that eliminated them in the semifinal round last year, in the finals on Saturday.

"It's pretty sweet," Libby coach Matt Warner said. "The team really played well together today.

"Our keeper (Audra Poppen) made a key save in the first half off a corner kick, getting the ball over the crossbar so we could maintain our 2-1 lead. The defense did a great job all the way up the field. Hamilton was coming on hard, so it was a battle until the end."

Gilden gave Libby its first lead on a pass from Valentine in the 11th minute. Hamilton, which finished 11-2-1, answered with a Casey Shifflett goal three minutes later.

That set the stage for Gilden's game-winner in the 34th minute.

"Anna (Valentine) was back on defense, stole the ball and made a nice pass upfield to Jaime," Warner said. "She took it in going one-on-one with the keeper."

The game was moved to Troy because of poor field conditions in Libby caused by football action and rain.

At Billings, the Bulldogs were outshot, 23-4, and finished up with a record on 7-5-2 with the loss in a Class A state semifinal.

Central scored all of its goals in the first half. Jackie Elliott started the onslaught with a goal in the ninth minute, then added another in the 16th minute and a third in the 21st minute.

Keepers Callie Marsh and Madisen Cross combined to make nine saves for Whitefish.

At Whitefish, the Bulldogs (10-3-1) punched their ticket into the Class A state final with the win. They will play host to 2008 state runnerup Billings Central in the title match.

Corvallis, which finished 11-3, drew first blood when Seth Pelkey found the back of the net on an assist by Aaron Jessop early in the second half.

The score stayed at 1-0 until the 70th minute when Matt Danczyk scored for Whitefish. Seven minutes later, Anton Daoud tallied the game-winner for the Bulldogs on an assist by Jack Steele.

Three yellow cards were given in the match, including one to Corvallis and two to Whitefish. The Bulldogs, state champs in 2007, will be looking to avenge a 4-1 loss to Billings Central in September.
