Class A volleyball: Frenchtown sweeps Laurel in unbeaten semifinal

BOZEMAN — The Frenchtown Broncs began the volleyball postseason with nothing to lose. Now they have everything to win.

Behind 11 kills from Jadan Ross and Morgan Ray, the unheralded Broncs, who were seeded fourth out of five teams in their divisional tournament two weekends ago, reached the championship round of the State A tournament with a 25-18, 26-24, 25-23 sweep of Laurel on Friday at Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

"It was all them," said Frenchtown coach Gypsy Ray, who has only nine players on her roster, none of them seniors. "That's all they could do, was turn to each other. And they believed they could do it and they did it."

Frenchtown was just 5-9 in the regular season. Through Northwest divisional play and now the state tournament, the Broncs have more postseason wins (7) than they did in the regular season.

"'They' say there are tournament teams," Ray said. "I guess we're a tournament team."

Laurel, too, is making its own unprecedented run at state. The No. 3 seed going into the Eastern A divisional, the Locomotives have already assured themselves of gaining a state tournament trophy for the first time in school history.

Bu they'll drop down into Saturday morning's third-place match, and still have a chance to meet Frenchtown again in the championship round.

Amanda Taylor had 12 kills and 20 digs, and Jayde LeFevre had seven kills and 23 assists for Laurel, which had difficulty building any long point runs that would have given it momentum.

"Frenchtown's a scrappy team," Laurel coach Jen Ebright said. "They got a lot of balls up that any other team we've played wouldn't have gotten up. So you have to give them credit for that.

"They were scrappy and turned it around on us."

BC volleyball season ends

Updated: November 9, 2012 at 5:31 pm

BOZEMAN — Butte Central fell in four games to Billings Central in a loser-out match this morning at the Class A State tournament at the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse.

Casey Tehle tallied 15 kills to lead the Rams to a 17-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-14 win.

Danee Leary smacked 11 kills and three blocks to pace the Maroons. Shannon McLaughlin served four aces and dished up 17 assists.

The loss ends what has to go down as the best season in school history. The Maroons had never qualified for the state tournament before.

The loss ends the BC volleyball career for Leary, McLaughlin and fellow seniors Danika Neumann, Mariah Cooney Taylor Marthaller and Annie Ossello.

Class A volleyball: Rams stay alive with 2 wins on Friday; 1 more to go

 •

BOZEMAN -- Two down, one to go.

Billings Central won its first two matches Friday at the State A volleyball tournament, keeping its hopes alive for some sort of trophy.

With four-set wins over Butte Central and Corvallis, the Rams were set to play Friday's last match of the night with the winner advancing to Saturday.

The Rams began the tournament with a first-round loss to Lewistown on Thursday.

"I think we overlooked a lot of things coming into the tournament," Central setter Baylee Hadley said. "Our main goal was to play Belgrade and beat Belgrade, but I think we overlooked a lot of people.

"That first loss yesterday showed us that you can't do that here at the state tournament, anything can happen. We just have our mindsets in the right spot today."

It didn't look that way early Friday. Butte Central defeated the Rams in the first set of loser-out play, but all that did was apparently give the Rams a wake-up call. Billings Central easily won the next three sets, then went on to a 2-0 set lead in its next match with Corvallis.

The Blue Devils won the third set and led 24-17 in the fourth. But Hadley served the next nine points and gave Corvallis a steady dose of Justyn Juhl (23 kills) on the outside, and the Rams clinched the match 26-24.

They were set to play either Belgrade or Lewistown later Friday night.

"We sat around (Thursday) and watched other teams play, and it kind of showed us that we should be there," Central coach Liz Hanser said. "And I think they proved it today. The losses all happened in the right time because I think it showed the girls they can play."
