Whitefish boys cap perfect season with State A soccer title

WHITEFISH – The whistle had no sooner sounded than the Whitefish boys scored.

The Bulldogs didn’t stop until they owned a 4-1 win over Billings Central in the State A championship match on Saturday.

The win avenged a 5-1 loss to Billings Central in the 2009 title match played in Whitefish. Four players who were freshmen on that team in 2009 – keeper Thomas Clark, midfielders Sean Janni and Curran Edland, and forward Sam Donaldson – all played key roles in Saturday’s win.

Janni scored that first goal in the first minute on a setup by Donaldson.

Central (13-2-0) knotted the game in the 20th minute on a goal from Conor Sheehy, his 19th tally of the season.

But the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into intermission when Nathan Boone scored in the 28th minute, again set up by Donaldson.

Edland scored inthe 46th minute off a free kick and Donaldson served up the final tally in the 70th minute with help from Boone.

Clark made seven stops to keep Central off the board for the final 60 minutes. The senior allowed just five goals all season.

Donaldson’s goal was his 24th of the season, one shy of the record he set last season.

Whitefish, which capped its perfect season at 15-0-0, owned a 12-6 edge in shots.

The championship was the fifth in school history for the Bulldogs.
