Central spikers sweep Hardin

•

Nicole Wildin admits Billings Central’s confidence buckled a little after last Saturday’s five-set loss to Miles City.

Not only did the Rams suffer an extremely rare Eastern A loss, they lost starting setter Baylee Hadley to an ankle injury.

“This win was really important. We were a little bit shaken after Miles City,’’ said the senior libero. “We had to stay together as a team and get back on track.”

Central regained its on-court mojo, fighting off Hardin 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 Thursday night at the Nelles Center.

It was the final home match for the Rams (21-5, 7-1) who clinched the Eastern A regular-season title. Central travels to Sidney on Saturday for matches against the Eagles and Glendive to close out the regular season.

Hardin (14-11, 6-4) is done with the regular season The Bulldogs host the Eastern A Divisional, Nov. 1-3.

Junior Justyn Juhl led Central with a double-double of 15 kills and 20 digs. She also had two aces. Junior Jenny Garber added 11 kills and two blocks, while sophomore Mirrada Clarin dished out 17 assists. Wildin and junior Erika Kuehn also had 17 digs each.

“How about Mirrada?’’ said Rams’ head coach Liz Hanser. “She steps in for Baylee and did so well. She did what we asked of her. She played hard.”

The Rams’ back row made sure that Clarin didn’t have to stray too far while running the offense.

“That puts a lot of pressure on us,’’ said Wildin. “We have to make sure we give her perfect passes. We have to put the ball in a good place so she can get it to our hitters.”

One of those was Kuehn, whose kill started Central’s 5-0 run to close out the first set.

The second set was a wild swing of momentum changes. The Rams opened a 5-0 lead on Casey Tehle’s serving, only to find themselves down 13-6. Hannah Ware and Sydney Millegan combined to serve 11 points for Hardin. Central came back to tie it 13-13 and after six ties, closed it on a Garber kill.

Snowy Johnson led the Bulldogs with eight kills, while Anna Old Crow and Ware won a handful of battles at the net.

“Hardin is a very tough team to play,’’ Wildin said. “They swing well to the open areas.

“The biggest thing for us is we were working together as a team, grinding out points.”

The Rams scored points in small bunches to break away in the third set.

“We kept pushing, playing hard,’’ said Hanser. “We needed this one for morale. They came together as team and they played well on senior night.”

NOTES: Prior to the match, the Rams honored their four seniors: Wildin, Tess Suek, Kehley Grosulak and Sarah Shaw. … Billings Central expects to have Hadley back for the Eastern A Divisional. … Miles City defeated Sidney Thursday night, allowing the Rams to clinch before the end of the regular season.
