Billings Central girls soccer opens with 8-0 win

  •

Haylee Heller scored three goals and Allie Lucas and Sammy Elliott each scored twice as four-time defending State A girls soccer champ Billings Central opened the season with an 8-0 win over Missoula Loyola.

Kelsie Nusbaum assisted on the team’s first three goals and Hadley Ryan stopped the only shot she faced as the Rams won going away.

Central coach Laurie Stergar said her new center midfield tandem of Nusbaum and Maya Arce, who also had an assist, did well in their first varsity pairing.

“Kelsie and Maya did a really good job today,” Stergar said. “It took them probably the whole first half to get used to each other, but the second half they did a really good job. We had a goal today to possess the ball, and we possessed the ball 90 percent of the game, the second half especially.”

Holly Davison also scored for the Rams, who play host to Frenchtown on Saturday morning. The match is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. at Wendy’s Field on the campus of Rocky Mountain College.

Laurel tops Frenchtown in girls soccer opener

  •

LAUREL -- Lexie Lewis, McKenzie Cotter and Allie McGrath each scored two goals to lead Laurel to a 7-1 season-opening girls soccer victory at the LHS Sports Complex.

The Locomotives led 2-0 at halftime behind goals from Cotter and Lexie Lewis. They added five more in the second half in what was their first-ever meeting with Frenchtown.

“The first half wasn’t real pretty,” said Laurel coach Aloma Jess. “I think we had some nerves. But at halftime we made some adjustments and settled down and played our tempo, played our game.”

Abbey Teagle scored the lone goal for Frenchtown.

Laurel will host Missoula Loyola Saturday at noon.
