Mavs come up one game short of shot at title

WHITEFISH - The Missoula Mavericks' season ended one game short of the state American Legion baseball Class AA title game Sunday afternoon.

Nick Funyak's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and the Billings Scarlets held on for a 5-4 victory over the Mavs at Memorial Park.

The Scarlets (36-21-1) advanced to meet the Billings Royals in a winner-takes-all championship conetst later today.

The Mavs tried to rally in the ninth, putting runners on first and second against Scarlets starting pitcher Colter Endy. But Missoula catcher Slade Heggen popped out to second to end it.

Missoula finished the season 47-26.

Visit Missoulian.com later today for a complete story on this afternoon's game.
