Pioneers off to a fast start

BONNER – The Missoula Pioneers showed why they are the five-time defending state champions Friday by defeating the Mission Valley Rockies 11-0 and the Great Falls Hawks 9-4 on the first day of the Senior Babe Ruth state tournament.

In the tournament’s opening game, both the Pioneers and Rockies struggled offensively early, mainly due to strong pitching performances by both squads, but especially Pioneers’ starter Kyle Booi.

Pioneers’ manager Dwayne McCrudden was pleased with Booi’s approach on the mound in the opener.

“He did a really good job of mixing things up. He worked all sides of the plate and changed the eye level a lot, which is exactly what you ask your pitcher to do,” McCrudden said.

Booi went the distance for Missoula, tossing a one-hitter and striking out eight batters.

Ryan Anderson had the lone hit for the Rockies.

Missoula got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Greg Pfister drew a walk, stole second, then scored after a wild throw by the Rockies over the third baseman’s head to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

Both teams played clean and stingy defense after the first, with the Pioneers clinging to their one-run advantage going into the bottom of the sixth.

The Pioneers then exploded in their half of the sixth, scoring 10 runs on eight hits.

T.J. Porter had a leadoff double and Booi, Luke Bewely, Austin McGill and Ben Metz drew consecutive walks to force in two runs.

Rockies’ starter Jeremiah Crawford was pulled after 5 2/3 innings of work.

The pitching change did not faze the Pioneers, who scored again on a wild pitch, a two-RBI double by Pfister and five consecutive RBI singles by Cody Oliver, Porter, Booi, Adler Sherrow and Lane Colyer. The outburst ended the game via the 10-run margin rule.

Although the offensive production was lacking until the sixth for Missoula, McCrudden said his team was due for a big rally.

“We were hitting the ball hard at them all game but they were able to stay in front of it for the most part,” McCrudden said.

“Then we finally took advantage of their mistakes and it opened up for that big run.”

In their second game, against Great Falls, the Pioneers were not nearly as dominant on the mound, but did just enough to maintain control of the game and keep the lead throughout.

The Pioneers took the lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Oliver and scored again in the second after Brandon DeYoung drove in Booi, who had a leadoff triple.

The Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the second on an RBI single by Trae Pruttis to cut the lead to one run.

Missoula answered in the third by scoring three runs, two on wild throws by the Hawks and a sacrifice fly by Sherrow.

The Pioneers added another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Oliver to make it 6-3 after the Hawks had driven in two runs in the fourth.

The Hawks scored their final run in the sixth on an RBI single by Ron Daley.

Sherrow gave the Pioneers a comfortable 9-4 cushion in the seventh, hitting a three-run bomb over the right-field wall.

The Pioneers were able to close the game out in the seventh.

McCrudden said if the Pioneers are able to keep up their play from Friday they will be primed to extend the streak to six straight state titles.

“We just have to keep making plays when they are in front of us because if you don’t, it can really come back to haunt you,” he said.

The Pioneers continue play Saturday at 10 a.m. against the Missoula Frontiers.

In other tournament action, the Missoula Frontiers beat the Helena All-Stars 6-1 and the Rockies beat Helena 15-4.

Three games are scheduled Saturday and at least one on Sunday, depending on how the games play out in this double-elimination tournament.
