Lakers tip Cannons for 3rd place at Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament

Posted: Sunday, July 1, 2012 11:05 pm

WHITEFISH — The Kalispell Lakers defeated the Spokane Cannons 4-3 in eight innings on Sunday to place third in the 28th annual Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament.

Jake Johnson, 2 for 4, had two RBIs for the Lakers and Cody Dopps, 1 for 2, had the team’s lone extra-base hit — a triple.

The Lakers finished the four-day tournament with a 3-2 record.

Johnson had a two RBI single to right center for the Lakers with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.

That put Kalispell on top 4-2.

Spokane scored once in the bottom half of the eighth.

“Jake has been coming up big for us in late innings,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.

“He’s done that three or four times.”

Adam Frandsen pitched six innings and allowed one hit.

“That allowed us to use Hank (McLeod) in the last two innings,” Malmin said.

“Adam was tremendous for us today.”

The Lakers pitching staff has been running on empty lately with six games in the last five days.

The Lakers have no time to rest with a single game today, 7 p.m., with the Great Falls Chargers followed by a doubleheader with the Chargers on Tuesday, starting at 3 p.m. All three games are Western AA contests.

NOTE: In the championship game of the Sapa-Johnsrud, Cody Ponce threw a no-hitter as the Chino Reds edged the Club Spokane Dodgers in eight innings, 1-0. Ponce struck out 11 batters and walked on — a leadoff pass in the sixth inning. The Reds scored the game’s winning run on an error after Rodney Little and Anthony Virgen both singled to start the bottom half of the eighth inning.
