Walla Walla holds off Mavericks, 6-4
The Missoula Mavericks ran into a crafty, college-tested pitcher in Walla Walla left-hander Drew Christina on Friday night.
Christina, who threw for Walla Walla Community College earlier this spring, struck out nine in leading his team to a 6-4 win over the host team in the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament at Lindborg-Cregg Field. Christina worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, striking out cleanup hitter Nathan Jewett to end the game.
Tanner Rheinschmidt went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Missoula (22-13). The Bears improved to 9-3.
Legion roundup: Booi powers Pioneers to two wins
DILLON – The Missoula Pioneers Senior Babe Ruth baseball team picked up a pair of 9-8 victories over Class A American Legion teams at the Maybelle Arthur tournament behind the power hitting of Kyle Booi.
Booi hit a pair of home runs in the Pioneers’ defeat of the Salmon (Idaho) Savages before belting three more in a victory over the host Dillon Cubs.
Against the Savages, Ben Metz earned the win in three innings of relief on the mound before Booi tossed the final inning to earn the save.
Booi drove in four, Cody Oliver was 3 for 3 with a double and Brandon DeYoung added a pair of singles.
Against the Cubs, Booi smacked three solo homers, including the game-winner in the top of the seventh to snap an 8-8 tie.
Metz was 2 for 3 for the Pioneers (21-7) and Dalton Gensch threw four frames of five-hit ball to post the win.
Missoula faces the Bitterroot Bucs at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. A Pioneers win would earn them a berth in Sunday’s championship game.
