Wildkats open LaVerne Combo with doubleheader sweep

BUTTE – The Columbia Falls softball team kicked off the annual LaVerne Combo tournament in style Friday as the Northwestern A Wildkats rallied to a 4-1 victory over Laurel.

Later in the day, Columbia Falls completed a perfect run at the first day of the two-day event by posting a 6-0 shutout of Livingston.

In their tournament opener, the Wildkats trailed 1-0 before scoring four times in the bottom of the sixth, which was the game’s final frame due to time limitations.

Ciarra Holm was 1 for 2 and drove in a pair for Columbia Falls, which won the pitchers’ dual with just three base hits off Locomotive hurler Tara Russell.

Jaylynn Cantu and Madison Sandefer also finished 1 for 2 for the Wildkats.

Ashley Trueblood allowed just three Laurel hits to post the complete-game victory.

Kelcie Wood and Emily Smarsh each were 1 for 2 for the Locomotives.
