Polson 15, Glacier 0

At Polson, the visiting Lady Wolfpack were not accorded much hospitality by the host Lady Pirates, who plundered their pitchers a quartet of times for the most costly of extra base hits.
BOTTOM OF 1ST - Leadoff hitter Ashley Johnson beat out the coverage of a bunt single. After the following batter was walked, both executed a double steal to advance within scoring position. Shay Duford sacrificed home the first run. Then cleanup batter Tina Marquardt crushed an offering over the left field fence to ratchet up the score to 3-0. Middle of the order batter Heidi Rausch was granted first base on account of having been hit by a pitch. Number six hitter Jaylin Kenney sacrificed Rausch over to second. Rausch would then score while Jessica Bagnell beat out the coverage of her single to give Polson a 4-0 lead. Polson would send their entire lineup to the plate before Glacier would be able to extract themselves from the inning.
TOP OF 2ND - With one out, number five batter Tacey Howe would reach first safely when the infielder got their glove on the ball but couldn’t hand onto it on account of the angle. But the runner would not advance as Polson snuffed the prospect.

BOTTOM OF 2ND - Johnson opened the inning with a single. Number two hitter Riley Kenney then bludgeoned the ball over the left field fence to extend the lead 6-0. Duford would reach second in her at-bat when the left fielder had trouble with her high flier partly on account of some gusty wind patterns. Cleanup Marquardt then literally cleaned up when she launched her second home run of the evening over the right field fence in the opposite direction of her first blast, extending the lead to 8-0. At this juncture Glacier swapped out pitchers by inserting Jena Willis on the mound and shifting Shayna Atlee over to cover third. The Lady Pirate hitter were not much kinder to her either. Three successive singles would follow. Willis was able to notch a pair of strikeouts, but leadoff batter Johnson would single for the third time in the game to plate a pair of runs. The remaining base runner from the first round of at-bats in the inning would score on a failed pickoff attempt at third base. Johnson advance to second on a stolen base and then would plate when Riley Kenney singled her home to now extend the lead 12-0. Willis was able to extract her team from the inning by getting Duford to line out to centerfield.

TOP OF 3RD - Glacier would threaten when bottom of the order batter Taylor Riggles singled with one out. But the subsequent batter would line out hard to the shortstop, who was able to rifle the ball to first base to double off the runner to snuff the threat.

BOTTOM OF 3RD - Three successive lineouts would make for an uneventful portion of the inning and gave Lady Wolfpack fans a respite from ill treatment.

TOP OF 4TH - Number two batter Kallie Evans would lead off the inning by getting hit by a pitch. Number three batter Katie McHugh would single to advance Evans over to second. After a strikeout, Tacey Howe would reach on a fielders choice when the shortstop relayed the ball to second base to force out McHugh for the second out., Evans advancing to third. But a subsequent strikeout would preserve the shoutout.

BOTTOM OF 4TH - number seven batter Bagnell would lead off the inning with a single. Makaliah Wilson would bring her home when she clobbered a home run that barely cleared the centerfield fence just out of the reach of the fielder who didn’t have time to activate her go-go-gadget arm extension, thereby extending the lead to 14-0. Wolfpack pitcher Willis would notch a pair of outs, but number two batter Riley Kenney would single to extend the inning. Duford would single to advance the runner. Both would steal to advance themselves over to third and second, with Kenney plating when the catcher made an offline throw attempting to pick off Kenney heading to third. That event would place the exclamation point on the Polson scoring for the evening.

TOP OF 5TH - Riggles was able to draw a walk with two out to extend the game a little further, but the subsequent batter’s attempt to lace a liner past the third base line was fielded and the final out recorded.

Rams use big innings to topple Hardin

HARDIN -- Billings Central scored four runs in the third inning and three more in the fifth en route to a 7-2 victory over Eastern A foe Hardin on Tuesday.

The Rams scattered 11 hits against pitcher Miranda Blankenship, and also took advantage of three Hardin errors. Sarah Shaw doubled and drove in two runs for Central. Pitcher Alex Rockwell earned the victory, limiting the Bulldogs to five hits.

Tori Snyder led Hardin's offense with a double and an RBI. Blankenship also doubled for the Bulldogs.

The Rams improved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the Eastern A. Hardin fell to 4-8 and 1-5 in the league.

Belgrade topples Helena softball 10-4

In the bottom of the sixth inning and trailing Class A Belgrade 5-3, Helena High shortstop Taylor Reisbeck stepped to the plate with runners on second and third base.

Reisbeck proceeded to loft a towering fly ball to deep left field, which the outfielder jumped for at the fence. As the Panther player crashed over Mihelish Field’s collapsible 5-foot plastic fence, the ball bounced back toward the outer fence. This brought the entire Helena team and its hometown fans to their feet, loudly cheering what they viewed as a three-run home run.

But hold the phone.

Bengal teammates Sarah Bryson and Darcy Ryan had already crossed the plate, and Reisbeck was rounding third and headed for home, when the home plate umpire waved off the homer, signaling that the ball had bounced before reaching the fence.

The ground-rule double sent Ryan back to third base and put Reisbeck back on second. Instead of leading 6-5, the Bengals still trailed 5-4.

Coach John Hawe argued the controversial call for several minutes, leading to his ejection from the game.

Helena (3-9) was then unable to score again, while Belgrade erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh and pulled away for a 10-4 win.

“I don’t want to talk about the (umpire’s) call, or the ejection,” Hawe said after the game. “What I will say is that up until the seventh inning, it was a close, very well-played game, by both teams.

“We were putting the bat on the ball and moving runners along, and Mac (MacKenzie Donnelly) was pitching a good game.”

The visitors outhit the Bengals 14-10, led by Taylor Hill, who went 3 for 4, with a home run and three runs batted in. Panther teammates Morgan Wandler and Taylor Johnson each stroked a double, with two RBIs.

Helena was paced by Reisbeck, Ryan and Kerstie Ward, at two base knocks apiece.

Justin Taylor pitched the win, while Donnelly, who was working on a seven-hitter over the first six innings, sustained the defeat.
