Fast starts, faster finishes at Top 10 meet

Big Sky’s Austin Lindsquist won the 110 meter hurdles Tuesday with a personal-best time of 14.84.

About the only thing better than the Missoula Big Sky girls’ finish Tuesday was Makena Morley’s start.

Morley, the freshman phenom out of Bigfork, had one of two records set at the 14th annual Russ Pilcher Western Montana Top 10 meet, at Missoula County Stadium.

And as amazing as her time of 10 minutes, 44.46 seconds in the 3,200 meters was, it was Morley’s start that turned heads and had Sentinel coach Dane Oliver asking: “Is this the 800?”

She got out that fast.

Morley’s pace didn’t noticeably slow through eight laps, and she broke the year-old meet record of 11:00.67 by Missoula Hellgate’s Paige Gilchrist (Gilchrist was second at 10:59.19 on Tuesday).

It was a fast track with a breeze that hit runners’ backs on the straightaway. The first record fell in the day’s second race, when Whitefish senior Amanda Foley sailed through the 100 meters in 12.51.

That broke the 8-year-old meet record of 12.54, set by another Whitefish standout, Courtney Ferda.

“She deserves it,” Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said of Foley, who edged Polson’s Anna DiGiallonardo (12.66) and Helena Capital’s Kalie Scholl (12.67). “She’s worked really hard and her senior season’s about having fun. From the time she was a freshman, she’s improved, and it’s so fun to see her like this: Under control, really strong.

“Her best races are still out there.”

The meet had a few other near-records, like Corvallis’ Ayden Eickhoff getting within a second of the 800 standard. In the long jump, Helena’s Allison Morrison marked 17 feet, 4 inches, just one inch off Big Sky product Lindsey Hall’s 3-year-old record.

Morrison was the lone double-winner in the girls’ field, which had such standouts as Morley (1,600), Missoula Sentinel’s Liz Harper (hurdles) and Thompson Falls’ Hope Reid (hurdles) sitting out some of their stronger events.

Corvallis’ Lakyn Connors sat out the 300 hurdles, but won the 100 hurdles in 14.82. Her teammate Courtney Albright won the discus. Loyola Sacred Heart’s Tawnie Kerr surged to victory in the 200.

The lone double-winner among the boys was Missoula Sentinel’s Jake Messerly, a junior who took the 100 and 200 dashes for the second straight season.

His time in the 200 was a season-best 22.30. He also ran on both of the Spartans’ relays, which finished third and second. In the latter he shadowed Capital anchorman Kyle Nickol, but couldn’t quite close him out in the final 100.

But he was unbeatable in the sprints, though Butte freshman Dalton Daum pushed to second in both races. Daum’s teammate Cody Carriger, a towering presence who’s headed to Oregon for football, was fifth in the 100 and third in the 200, and Bo Taylor was fourth in the 200.

“I was kind of worried about Carriger more than anything,” said Messerly. “It’s kind of intimidating running with those Butte kids. That’s all I was worried about, was being in between them. They’re huge.”

The expected highlight was the 800 dual between Columbia Falls’ Derrick Williams and Darby’s Seth Raymer, but they squared off first in the 1,600 with Raymer sprinting to the win in 4:25.03.

Williams was a second behind.

Raymer limped away from the win, however, with a tight thigh and scratched the 800; Williams held off Big Sky’s Ty Rather to win in 1:59.57. It was an impressive return from injury for Williams, as it turned out.

“He’s nursing a little foot injury,” Columbia Falls distance coach Jim Peacock said. “This is his first race in a couple weeks.”

Florence’s Dylan Reynolds edged Frenchtown’s Brady Baughman in the 300 hurdles, running 39.83; Josh Lords of Stevensville won the long jump and Thompson Falls’ Dominique Holt took the high jump.

Corvallis had three individual winners: Tyler Berner in the pole vault, Raymond Jessop in the javelin, and Brandon Butt in the discus.

The meet features the top athletes in the region, but Missoula was well-represented: Austin Lindquist took the 110-meter hurdles, Darby Maier won the shot put and Weston Northrop the triple jump for Big Sky; Adam Peterman won the 3,200 for Hellgate.

Then the Big Sky girls’ took the final event – the long relay. Corvallis came in without anchor runner Sadi Henderson, who was ill. Spencer Huls subbed in Jessica Lewis, the Blue Devils’ “high jumper-slash-shot putter-slash-utility girl” and told her to go out fast.

“As hard as you can, as long as you can,” Huls said. “Sometimes if you have a lead and get out even farther, the other person might bag it. Elle Tinkle’s not that way, though.”

Tinkle, who won the 400 Tuesday, took the baton a full six seconds behind Lewis, but caught her at the tape. The Eagles won by .09 – in 4:07.68 – to complete a relay sweep. They won the short relay in 50.57, just under the State AA qualifying time of 50.60.

“That’s the first time we’ve qualified in the 4-by-one before divisionals in a couple years, I’m sure,” noted Katie McKay. “I don’t think we qualified in the 4-by-four last year, either, until divisionals.”

“We’ve been doing much better, all the time,” said Tinkle, who ran a 58.9-second split in the final race. “Saturday we ran our 4:04, and to come back a few days later and run a 4:07, I’m pretty proud. Good team effort, for sure.”
