Columbia Falls downs Stevi, 53-36, in State A opener

BUTTE – One defensive switch and one big run equaled one huge turnaround for Columbia Falls, which downed Stevensville 53-36 in the first round of the State A boys’ basketball tournament Thursday.

Center Austin Barth and reserve Luke Kazlauskas scored 13 points each for the defending champion Wildcats, who weathered an early charge and advanced to Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinal at the Civic Center. They’ll play Billings Central, which sprung a 51-47 upset on top-ranked Browning in Thursday’s late game.

Stevensville, 18-4, will face the 19-2 Indians at 2 p.m. Friday in a loser-out game.

Columbia Falls 53, Stevensville 36

The Wildcats are 18-3 after holding the Yellowjackets to 30 percent shooting, using a 1-3-1 zone defense to get out on the 3-point arc. The first time around they played Stevi, on Dec. 10, they went with last year’s standard 1-2-2 zone and lost 67-48.

“The first time out … I was learning my guys a little bit,” said Wildcats’ coach Cary Finberg. “About six games in we figured out the 1-3-1 was better suited for what we like to do and much better suited for our personnel.”

Stevensville led 14-7 early after a 3-pointer from Tyler Gavlak. Columbia Falls eventually went in front for good, 21-20, on Anthony Correa’s free throw 45 seconds before halftime.

Soon Stevensville, locked in the type of physical game it prefers, got out of sorts.

“They’re very physical and they’re very good at it,” Finberg said of the Jackets. “It took our kids a little bit to adjust to their style, and at the state tournament the officials are going to let you play a little more. And I thought they did a good job of allowing us to play a little physical down on our end, too.”

The game was close until midway through the final period, though Columbia Falls tried to pull away in the third quarter. Four points from Trinastich and a 3-pointer from Kazlauskas put the Wildcats up 30-23 at the 1:25 mark.

But when Josh Schultz hit a pair of 3-pointers for Stevi, the gap was down to 36-33 with 5:31 left in the game.

Columbia Falls scored the game’s next 17 points, starting with a Kazlauskas bucket following his own steal.

Kazlauskas had six points in the surge, which saw Stevensville throw away back-to-back lobs for freshman center Jesse Sims and miss five free throws.

“We were stagnant,” said Stevensville coach Keith Chambers, whose club was 6 for 20 from inside the 3-point arc and outside. “I don’t know. You wonder why they don’t make mouse-flavored cat food, too. You can’t figure it out.”

Long rebounds off Stevi 3-point misses led to fast-break baskets for the Wildcats late. Alex Presnell hit back-to-back baskets and Barth hit two free throws to cap the run with 31 seconds left, making the score 53-33. Barth also had 13 rebounds.

Schultz had 12 points for Stevensville, all on 3-pointers. Sims added seven points and eight rebounds for the Jackets, who can still gun for a third-place trophy.

“There’s two teams that come out of here smiling,” Chambers said.

Beavers dam Pirates in first-day action at State A

 Walter Hinick

Polson’s Zack Camel is guarded by Dillon’s J.T. Linder, left, and Austin Williams during their State A boys’ basketball tournament game on Thursday in Butte. Dillon beat Polson 47-27.

BUTTE – If these Dillon Beavers get back to finishing, they’re going to be dangerous.

As it was Dillon’s defense and balance were too much for Polson on Thursday, in a 47-27 win over the Pirates at the State A boys’ tournament inside the Butte Civic Center.

Dillon (19-2) advanced to Friday’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal against Laurel, which downed Livingston 58-41 in the tournament’s first game to improve to 17-4.

The Beavers mostly did it with a defense that allowed just two second-half field goals and an offense that, when patient, was deadly.

Polson (10-13) shot just 21 percent and fell into a loser-out game with Livingston (16-5) at 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Dillon 47, Polson 27

Wes Knox led Dillon with 10 points; four more Beavers scored from seven to nine. A couple bursts — 8-0 late in the first half and 7-0 midway through the third quarter — forged leads of 24-16 and 33-19.

Knox had a chance to make it 35-19 with 2:00 left in the third quarter, but banged a dunk attempt off the back iron; Polson’s Zack Camel then drained a 3-pointer to temporarily stem the bleeding.

The Pirates trailed by six at halftime thanks in large part to their work on the offensive glass, Riley Sampson in particular.

“The first half we didn’t rebound quite as well as we wanted,” said Dillon coach Terry Thomas, whose club lost in last year’s title game. “That was about the only thing defensively we needed to fix.

“And offensively we felt like we just needed to run the offense a little bit more and get a better shot. We were shooting pretty quick there the first half.”

It changed the second half, though the Beavers also got out on the break. In the half-court set Knox put back a prayer of a shot by Ben Folsom; after he blew his dunk he ended another breakaway with a high-percentage layup.

Of course another outlet pass banged off the head of Austin Williams and back to Polson before the quarter ended.

“I thought the kids just did a nice job of trying to advance the ball,” Thomas said with a chuckle. “We had some plays that didn’t get finished but we were certainly out there running and being unselfish.”

Chevy Reed added seven points and 12 rebounds for Dillon, which held Polson to a season-low in points. The gap was just 27-19 when the Pirates went especially cold, with Camel and Ian Laimbeer missing from close range.

“We shot 21 percent,” Polson coach Brad Pluff noted. “Some of that has to do with them — they’re a very good defensive team. But I feel like we missed some opportunities. We had some shots that we should be able to hit and we didn’t. I think there was a stretch in the third quarter where we missed four layups in like three trips. You can’t do that against good teams.”

Camel and Cody Fischer each had seven points to lead the Pirates, who shot 2 for 17 from the floor after intermission, with eight turnovers. Sampson had six points and eight rebounds.

“We felt we had to limit turnovers, be patient on offense and shoot the ball well,” Pluff said. “And that was to give us a chance. I’m hoping they’re not just happy to be here … we’ll see tomorrow afternoon.”
