IDOL REPRESENTS NWMTA IN GAMES VS WYOMING
June 23, 2009 Northwest Montana A Conference
Montana sweeps Wyoming By the Missoulian SHERIDAN, Wyo. - The Montana boys and girls each posted lopsided victories Friday night in the first of a two-game Montana-Wyoming all-star high school basketball series.
Two-time Montana Gatorade Player of the Year Joslyn Tinkle from Missoula Big Sky paced the Treasure State girls to a convincing 82-53 victory. In the boys' game, Peter Stordahl of Billings West paced Montana to a 117-94 victory, raising its series lead to 43-24 all time.
Tinkle, the McDonald's All-American who led the Eagles to two straight State AA championships and will play next season at Stanford, dropped in a game-high 10 buckets from the field to lead all scorers. The 6-foot-3 Tinkle scored 15 points in the first half as Montana seized control with two big runs. She scored nine points during a 17-2 run that produced a 23-13 lead early in the second quarter. Hamilton graduate Ashley Albert, a Montana State signee, had one of Montana's four 3-pointers on the evening and finished with 15 points. She and Tinkle were the only two Montana players to score in double digits. Former Kalispell Flathead guard Kelsey Hildal, who has been invited to walk on at the University of Montana, finished with seven points.
"I thought our girls maintained their intensity the whole game,'' Montana coach Brian Henderson told the Billings Gazette. "We had a run here and there and basketball is such a game of runs. Our consistency was good. We didn't have a drop even when we had about every conceivable combination we could have.''
Taylor Anderson sank a trio of 3-point buckets en route to a Wyoming-best 14 points. Morgan Mines dropped in 10 for Wyoming.
Stordahl scored 11 points in the third quarter of the boys' contest and finished with a team-leading 18 points. Tanner Bleskin of Great Falls Russell and Michael Crandell from Scobey had 15 each. Bozeman's Gabe Rucker and Dillon's Bryce Carver both scored 14. Kalispell Glacier's Ben Cutler finished with 12 and West's Eric Halverson had 10.
"We shot the ball really well,'' said Montana coach Bill Dreikosen. "Everything flows when you shoot well. We rebounded pretty good and they got off to a slow start. They came back (in the third quarter), but I thought we finished strong.''
Montana ran out to a 28-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and built its largest lead of 87-53 in the third. The 117 points is the most Montana has scored since putting up 122 in 1990.
Tom Earl scored 18 to lead Wyoming, while Michael Dietz had 16 and Keeton Tucker added 14.
The teams meet again Saturday night at Rocky Mountain College in Billings.
