MEMPHIS – Rising sophomore Matt Ferguson won't have to worry about where he'll play baseball after Northwest, as the right-hander from Arlington, Tenn., committed to the University of Memphis on Friday.
"Memphis gave me a good offer and they needed a weekend starter, which is what I originally wanted before I started the recruiting process," Ferguson said. "They offered me awhile back and gave me time to decide, and I found that really appealing. It seemed like they wanted me more than anyone else."
Ferguson also received interest from the likes of Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Mississippi, UAB, Tennessee Tech and Southeast Missouri before making his decision.
"I like that my family is close by to see me play and if I need something at home I'll be close. I'm excited about Memphis and it will take a bunch of pressure off me this year."
A second team all-state selection last season, Ferguson went 7-2 with a 3.65 ERA and a pair of complete games in 13 appearances (10 starts). In 55.2 innings of work, he struck out 36 against 25 walks while opponents hit .273 against him.
