Copiah-Lincoln Stymies Northwest, 48-24

SENATOBIA – Northwest scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and showed a lot of fight late, but it was the 6th-ranked Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack who built a commanding lead after three and left Bobby Franklin Field with a 48-24 victory Thursday night.
Co-Lin improved to 2-0 on the young season while Northwest dropped to 0-2.
Scoreless through the first 14 minutes, Kelton Smith scored from four yards out to give the Wolfpack a 7-0 lead. The score was setup by Jonathon Calvin's interception return down to the 4-yard line. Co-Lin quickly made it 14-0 when Carroll Phillips picked off Kyle Morgan and returned it 29 yards for a score.
A 12-play, 56-yard drive over 6:17, capped by another Smith rushing touchdown, made it 21-0 Co-Lin before DeLance Turner added a 15-yard rushing touchdown to give the Pack a 27-0 lead at the half.
Co-Lin outgained Northwest 200-94 in the opening 30 minutes.
Co-Lin scored touchdowns on three of its four possessions in the third quarter and opened up a 48-0 lead. Daniel Fitzwater tossed TD passes of 29 and 36 yards and BeJay Welch recovered a fumble in the end zone after a bad snap on a punt attempt.
Northwest's best drive of the night, a 7-play, 86-yard drive over 3:09 ended in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Morgan to D'Montrise Swinney. Seconds later, after the ensuing kickoff, Marcel Newson intercepted backup quarterback Zack Smith's first pass attempt and returned it 43 yards for a score.
The Rangers pulled it within 48-21 with 9:22 to play when Damian Baker scored his first touchdown of the season from 22 yards out. He closed the night with 13 carries for 37 yards. Boone Frederick capped the scoring with a 36-yard field goal with 4:36 to play.
Co-Lin outgained Northwest 324-236 on the night and held the Rangers to zero rushing yards.
Fitzwater was 13-for-22 for 194 yards, two touchdowns and an interception and connected with Koy McFarland three times for 75 yards and a score.
Morgan, who entered late in the first quarter after Miller was carted off on a stretcher, closed the night 13-for-30 for 190 yards, a touchdown and two picks. Swinney had a team-high nine catches for 90 yards and a score, Robert Liggins added two catches for 55 yards and Jamarius Mabry had two catches for 46 yards.
Defensively, Terrell White had a team-high seven tackles and an interception, while Chris Fox and Demetrius Farmer had six tackles apiece and Newson had a 43-yard touchdown return. Jordan Harris led Co-Lin with 11 tackles.
Northwest will try and grab its first win next Thursday night in Clarksdale as they face off with Coahoma (0-2) at 6:30 p.m. at James E. Miller Stadium. The Rangers lead the all-time series 36-2.
