Northwest Closes Solid Weekend at TigerFest with Two, Big Wins

February 26, 2012

BOONEVILLE – Northwest wrapped up a solid 3-2 weekend at the Northeast TigerFest with two wins on Saturday, taking down Indian Hills (Iowa) and Jefferson College (Mo.) with identical 4-2 scores. The Rangers fell 6-5 to Calhoun (Ala.) in the middle game of the afternoon on a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth inning just as the 105-minute time limit elapsed.

Against Indian Hills in the opening game of the day, the Rangers rallied from a two-run deficit with a four-run fifth inning to knock off the Warriors.

Paige Blom's two-out, two-RBI single in the third gave Indian Hills the early lead, 2-0.

After leaving two runners stranded in both the second and fourth innings, Northwest finally broke through in the fifth. Amanda Bies' leadoff single got the inning started, with Lauren Riley's two-RBI double to right knotting the game at 2-2. Linsey Hebert then plated the go-ahead run a batter later off a wild pitch, while Riley came around to score the Rangers' fourth run off an infield error.

Casey Baddley entered in relief of Stormy Robison to pick up the win in the circle, tossing 2 2/3 innings of no-hit ball while striking out three. Seven different Rangers picked up a hit as well in the victory.

Northwest jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the first against Calhoun, but the Warhawks would slowly chip away at the Ranger lead and eventually win it on a two-out, walk-off single in the sixth.

Four singles in the first inning and Robison's bases-clearing triple gave Northwest the early lead.

Calhoun got three back in the third, using a two-run home run from Bryonna Jackson and RBI-double from Rachel Norton. After Vicki Johnson's leadoff homer in the fourth, the Warhawks then knotted the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the frame thanks to Chelsea Bennich's solo homer and a Jackson's RBI-triple.

After holding Northwest scoreless in the fifth and sixth, Cortney Jones delivered a pinch hit single and later came around to score the winning run to win the game for Calhoun.

For a second consecutive game the Rangers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, and this time held on to defeat Jefferson College in the weekend finale, 4-2.

Riley and Natalie Smock delivered back-to-back RBI-hits to put Northwest on the scoreboard first in its opening at-bat, with the Rangers increasing the lead to four runs off a pair of sacrifice hits.

Chloe Wolf's two-out, two-RBI single to left cut the deficit in half for Jefferson College in the third.

Baddley closed the door on a perfect 3-0 weekend by allowing just two hits the final three innings, including getting out of a jam in the sixth to preserve the win.

Riley paced the Ranger offense on the day, going 6-for-8 with three doubles and three RBIs while both Smock and Hebert picked up three hits apiece.

Northwest will host Southwest Tennessee in its home-opener on Monday, followed by a pair of games against Hinds on Tuesday. Both doubleheaders start at 1 p.m.
