This season has started off well for the Brenham football team. Right now the Cubs are 3-0 and are clicking in every aspect of the game as of right now. And after watching the bend-but-don’t-break Cubs this past weekend against District 20-5A power Lamar, it seems like they are on a mission.
And we were right. Brenham ended up winning the contest 21-10, but it wasn’t a win where one could point to one instance or another. It was more like giving little here and there and making the most of the big plays they were able to get.
“I thought our kids were courageous and we made some huge plays at times in the game. That was the key to the victory,” Brenham coach Glen West said.
Whether it was the interceptions by Darrion Johnson and Justin Davis, or the constant pressure applied by defensive tackle Malcom Brown and linebacker Jerrid Jeter-Gilmon, the Cubs kept the heat on Lamar.
Offensively, Dean Haveman and Tre’mund Moore kept a steady connection going as the two of them hooked up early and often.
But what is it about this team? There is not a lot of flash, but instead this team is a group of grinders. Could it be due to the fact that this team feels like there is somewhat of unfinished business (see last year bi-district match up for clarity)?
Cleary, there is an overall new attitude with this team and West addressed this briefly.
“We know how precious every win is. Every time we go out we try to get that next win,” West said. “Last year we may have taken it for granted a little bit and it came up and got us. You have to go out and win every single week.”
Though it won’t go in the win column, but Brenham has a bye week for this weekend. After three tough games, surely the Cubs can use this rest to their advantage. Plus it could provide some time for some to tend to their wounds, notably running back Troy Green who left the game a bit banged up.
“We have ‘Open’ this week. I guarantee we are not going to lose it,” West said jokingly.
After this week, the Cubs travel to take on Magnolia West.
