This season so far, Westfield is averaging 40 points a game and is 3-0 for 2012. That includes a Thursday night district opener against Klein Collins with a 40-19 win at Klein Memorial Stadium.
And though some of the performances have been dominant, using last week as an example, it still is not quite what Westfield coach Corby Meekins is looking for in regards to playing an entire game.
“I thought we came out flat last week, and Memorial is a good football team. You can’t come out flat in this district or you will walk away with an ‘L,’” Meekins said. “Obviously, we learned from it because we came out ready to play football tonight and had great focus.”
No doubt about that. The Mustangs were able to do nearly anything they wanted offensively and defensively. They ran for 206 yards (led by Emmitt Raleigh, 27/162 yards) while passing for another 216 (from William Dedon connecting mainly with Tevin Lewis 9/107 yards).
On defense, the pressure was on as Westfield forced four turnovers, including a couple of interceptions by Ron Knowles.
“They played 48 minutes and that’s all you can ask for. We are not going to be perfect, but if we can play 48 minutes, we got a chance,” Meekins said. “I’m proud of the guys. They came out and executed.”
