DIAMOND DREAMS

The State Championship Goes through North Houston

THE WOODLANDS: Preseason polls don't mean much in the world of baseball. The sport has so many nuances which can change a direction of a year that prognosticators can drive themselves batty prior to the season. Tomball and Montgomery were not the trendy preseason pick but battled the longest.

A year ago, both the Klein Collins and Montgomery's softball programs finished their seasons in heartbreaking fashion. The Lady Tigers fell in a testy game against the eventual state champs The Woodlands, while the Bears lost in a Game 3 against eventual Class 4A champ Santa Fe High School. What a difference a year makes.

After a 1-9 season one year ago, it was time for a change at Oak Ridge High School. Enter John Tyler High School's Dereck Rush, who is walking away from a perennial powerhouse to coach the War Eagles. VYPE caught up with the new coach while he was busy evaluating his new players and hiring a staff.

School is out for the summer, but just before the books were turned in for the year, spring football gave the football community a glimpse into what to expect for the 2012 season. Coaching changes made things interesting as several schools have a new sheriff in town. District 13-5A will be a blood bath again while The Woodlands unveil its' new star.
