Even though the Klein baseball team lost a few games through the regular season, the Bearkats seem to be getting it done when it matters most in these playoffs. After handling College Park in Round, Klein was faced against its Austin-area rival in Georgetown.
It took the full three games, but Klein will advance after the weekend’s wins.
“We beat Georgetown in three games. We lost Game 1 2-1, won game two (3-2) and closed out game three 6-3,” Klein right fielder Blake Rhodes said. “This series was really intense.”
In Game 1, Klein had the opportunity to take the first one, but came up empty with the bases loaded in the final inning. Clearly that fired up the Bearkats as they won a close one in Game 2, behind the good pitching of Sam Odom. According to Rhodes, Odom had a solid series on the mound.
“He (Odom) was throwing well for Game 2. That game was close all the way,” Rhodes said. “In fact, he was good all series because he closed out Game 3 for us too.”
By the time the win was in the bag for Game 2, Rhodes said he could tell that the team was not going to let Game 3 get away from them. The adrenaline was flowing and the momentum was in their favor.
Though there were a number of solid players for Klein on this weekend, Rhodes said that Andrew Santacroce was getting it done in this series too.
“He was our lead off and he was making some things happen on the bases,” Rhodes said.
The Bearkats will advance and face district rival Tomball. The series starts on Thursday at Tomball, Friday at Klein and the final game (if necessary) will be played at The Woodlands.
