Tony Uggen has been athletic director since 2003-04.  Prior to that he taught 8th grade U.S. History from his arrival in 1991 until taking over as A.D.  He also taught at one time or another 11th U.S. History, 7th and 9th geography, health and driver education.  A graduate of Blackford HS in 1983, Uggen earned his Bachelor's degree from Taylor University (’88), his Master’s degree from Indiana University (IPFW)(’00) and his building level administrative license at Indiana Wesleyan (’09)

During his time as A.D., he has worked hard to encourage the coaching staff to be role models for the kids and to teach the value of sportsmanship and life-long lessons that can be learned through athletics.  He encourages a more “coaching by teaching” philosophy.  He also has worked to prepare assistant coaches so that they can move up and eventually fill head coaching positions from within.  The Norse currently have four head coaches on staff who were assistants at Northfield since Uggen became athletic director. 

He has overseen major improvements in the athletic facilities including new press boxes, dugouts and extensive infield surface improvements on the softball and baseball fields, outfield fence at the baseball field, new goal posts and field equipment for the football field, the naming of most of the athletic facilities, the addition of wall padding and banner upgrades in Kaltenmark Gym, all new scoreboards in Kaltenmark Gym including a stat board and scrolling advertisement board and new scoreboards at the football, baseball and softball fields, the planting of many trees along the tennis courts, softball, baseball and football fields which will add windbreaks as well as beautify the grounds and the addition of a large projector screen in the auditorium.  He has also re-worked team accounts to make coaches responsible for raising the funds necessary to make their programs financially self-sufficient.

He is the president of the Running Rivers (Junior High) Conference which is a position he has held since the conference’s inception during the 2007-08 school year.  He is also a member of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, the Indiana High School Football Coaches Association and the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Uggen is also the head baseball coach at Northfield, a position he has held since taking over the program from long time head baseball coach Craig Winegardner in 1994.  The Norse have won 375 games over his 19 years including 12 TRC titles, 6 sectional, 3 regionals and the 2001 &and 2012 Class 2A State Championships.  He was named Class 2A Coach of the Year in 2001 by the IHSBCA and was runner up once.  He is currently one of two finalists for 2012 Class 2A Coach of the Year.  He has also been named District Coach of the Year four times and was the North All-Star coach in 2006.   He also served as head football coach from 1998-2000 and was at one time or another was an assistant coach in football (9 years), basketball (1 year) and baseball (2 years) at NHS.  He also coached freshman girls basketball and freshman baseball at Blackford for one year prior to coming to Northfield.

He has been married to his wife Lisa (Mallow) for 2 years and they live in Wabash.  They have five children:  Christian Fleener, Brandon Fleener, Stephanie Uggen, Brendan Uggen and Elly Uggen.  They enjoy time with their kids, road trips, travel and walks around the neighborhood.
