NIC Spring Sports 2014 Summary
Girls’ Track & Field
Penn won the NIC Meet with 159 points to Mishawaka’s 2nd place 123.5 points
Penn won the Sectional at Bremen with 155 points to Mishawaka’s 121 points
Warsaw, out of the NLC, won the Warsaw Regional with Penn, SB Adams and Mishawaka finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The NIC grabbed eight 1st place Regional finishes.
At the State Finals, no NIC teams finished in the top 20, but 4 NIC schools scored points.
Mishawaka’s Anna Rohrer defended her 3200m state title, establishing a new state record while Penn freshman Ashleigh Macleod won the 800.
Mishawaka’s Anna Rohrer won the New Balance Outdoor Track & Field championship in the 5,000 m event in Greensboro, NC on June 13.
Boys’ Track & Field
Mishawaka won the NIC Meet with 129 points, to Penn’s 2nd place finish of 122 points.
Penn won the Sectional, by winning four (4) events with 121 points to Mishawaka’s 117 points for 2nd place.
Penn finished 2nd at the South Bend St. Joseph Regional to champion Warsaw, with eight NIC schools scoring points, with the NIC schools, Penn 2nd, Mishawka 3rd, and SB Adams 4th. The NIC had nine 1st place finishes at the Regional.
At the State Finals, six NIC schools scored points. The best NIC finish was Penn’s Tim Deal who finished 2nd in the 300 Hurdles.
Penn won the NIC regular season with a 15-1 record. (Their 15th since 1995)
4A Sectional results – Penn 5-2 over SB Clay, for the 4A Sectional championship at Plymouth.
3A Sectional results – Marian upset St. Joseph in the 1st round, but then lost in the semi-finals.
In the 4A Regional at LaPorte, Penn lost in the 1st round to Hobart, 8-3.
Marian the NIC championship with 7-1 record.
Penn beat SB Clay, 12-2 for the 4A Sectional title at Mishawaka
Penn beat Concord, 11-1 to win the 4A Regional at Penn to advance to the 4A Semi-State.
Penn at 4A Semi-state at West Lafayette Harrison, Penn lost to Hamilton Southeastern, 4-3 in the 1st round.
In the 3A Sectional, St. Joseph’s upset #1 ranked Marian (3A), 2-1 in the semi-finals at Newton Park. St. Joseph then won the 3A Sectional with a 6-0 victory over Jimtown.
St. Joseph’s defeated Western, 8-2 in the 3A Regional match-up at Newton Park to advance to the Twin Lakes 3A Semi-State.
St. Joseph’s lost to Yorktown,3-2 in the 3A Semi-state 1st round at Twin Lakes (Monticello).
St. Joseph won the NIC with an 8-0 record in dual matches.
Penn & St. Joseph’s won their respective Sectionals, Penn won the Regional, defeating St. Joseph, 5-0 for the Regional title, advancing to the South Bend Semi-State.
Penn lost to Carmel, 5-0 at the South Bend Semi-state at Leeper Park.
Penn finished 8-0 in duals, but share the NIC championship with Marian who won the NIC Tournament with Penn finishing 2nd and Marian had 7-1 dual meet record to create the tie.
Marian won the NIC meet with Marian’s Augi Hartnagel earning medalist honors with a 71
At the Riley Sectional at Erskine Marian finished in 1st Place and Penn was 2nd to advance to Warsaw Regional.
At the Warsaw Regional, Marian’s Michael Makris advanced to the IHSAA State Finals with a score of 72. Marian and Penn’s teams finished in 9th & 10th place out of a field of 18 schools in the Regional. Only the top three teams advance.
Michael Makris of Marian finished 4th overall at the State Finals with two day score of 143, which included a 68 on the second day.
