Wrestlers Finish Season at Semi-State

February 11, 2013
Indianapolis North Central High School

North Central Wrestling - Semi-State - February 9, 2013 - Results

Finish 1st through 4th and you go to State!!

With the #1 Ranked Perry Meridian and #2 Ranked Warren Central teams and 77 individual State-Ranked wrestlers, 28 of whom either didn't get out of the first round, or advance to the State Tournament, the New Castle Semi-State was the most difficult and best Semi-State Tournament in Indiana.

Surprise! Surprise! ... Perry Meridian finished 1st with 163.5 points and Warren Central finished a distant 2nd with 112.0 points.

Most Surprising Success:

Unranked Zionsville came in with six wrestlers (only one State-Ranked), and three are going to State.

Most Surprising Disappointment:

First Place - At 285 lbs., the #3 State-Ranked wrestler from Warren Central faced the #2 State-Ranked wrestler from Cathedral in the infamous "ticket" or second round.  He lost in overtime.  So now our #3 wrestler is going-home, and we're sending the #1, #2 and #18 State-Ranked wrestlers to State.

In short, the IHSAA does not allow wrestle-backs at Regional and Semi-State for third and fourth place.

For the purpose of shorter events and appearing "impartial", the IHSAA has held-fast to a format that is "unfair".

I'm sure other great wrestlers in the other Semi-State Tournaments will not be at the State Tournament.  Why can't the State Tournament encompass all the best wrestlers in the State?

Tie for Second Place - #19 State-Ranked Franklin Central came in with six wrestlers and only one is going to State.  Unranked East Central came in with seven wrestlers and did not score a single point.

North Central Results:

Our wrestling season ended with Semi-State.

Seth Issacs (JR 182 lbs., 36-9) ... Sectional and Regional Champion, Seth was another victim of the IHSAA's Semi-State format.

In the "ticket" round Seth lost to the #3 State-Ranked wrestler from Perry Meridian, SR Jake Masengale, 0-1.

Seth wrestled his best match of the year.  Two times he was a foot-or-so away from a take-down.  But Jake got them off the mat.

Jake is just a great wrestler and went on to win the Semi-State Championship.  Seth was the toughest match he had all day.  It would have been fun to see them in opposite brackets and in the "Finals".

Kylan Seats (SO 120 lbs.) ... Kylan lost in Round 1 to the #13 State-Ranked wrestler from Westfield, who finished fourth and is going to State.

Kylan has become a good wrestler this season.  Next year he can be a great wrestler.

Jhonatan Pasten (JR 126 lbs.) ... Jhonatan lost in Round 1 to the #9 State-Ranked wrestler from Southmont, who finished fifth.

During this season, Jhonatan has shown that he can be a good wrestler.  Next year he can be good-great.

Trevon Williams (SR 220 lbs.) ... Trevon lost in Round 1 to a tough wrestler from Franklin Central, who finished sixth.

A dominating wrestler during this season, Second at Sectional and Second at Regional (to the Lawrence Central wrestler who will be at State), Trevon was a most-welcomed addition to this year's team.  Trevon lost a lot of mat-time this year to injury, and suffered another injury during this match.

This Season is Over - Next Year:

At the start of this season, Seth was the only returning "Varsity" wrestler.

It is an absolute "statement-for-the-future" that the hard work of our wrestlers and coaches resulted in advancing eight "under-classmen" to Regional and three "under-classmen" to Semi-State.

I can't wait until next season!!
