10 NC Wrestlers Advance to Regional

January 27, 2013
Indianapolis North Central High School

North Central Wrestling - Sectional - The Most Important Event of the Season - January 26, 2012 - Results
2013 Sectional Champion - Seth Issacs (JR 182 lbs.)
Seth (The Surgeon) Issacs (32-7), wrestled great and smart to defeat a good Lawrence Central wrestler (24-12), and a good Cathedral wrestler (23-11), to be the 2013 Sectional Champion.
He joins a "select" group of North Central Sectional Champions!
After being shut-out last year ... All I can say is ... Thanks Seth!!
Team Results:
Cathedral ruled the day and won the team title with 276.0 points.  Congratulations to Cathedral.
A much improved and very good Lawrence Central team finished second with 228.0 points, and Lawrence North was third with 221.0 points.
Your North Central Wrestling Team finished fourth, the same as last year, with 168.5 points, ahead of Chatard, Brebeuf, Arlington and Park Tudor.
Individual Highlights:
Ten State Ranked wresters competed, two in the 145 lbs. weight class.  As predicted, nine were Sectional Champions.
But First through Fourth Place advance next week to Regional.
There are 14 weight classes, and last year North Central advanced seven wrestlers to Regional.
All 11 of our wrestlers fought hard, and this year 10 will be at Regional!

Elijah Glover (FR 106 lbs.) - Elijah finished fourth after a two-point loss to Cathedral and a two point loss to Chatard.  Elijah has improved so much this year and was only "one" takedown + one escape away from finishing second or third.  What a fighter!
Kylan Seats (SO 120 lbs.) - As predicted, Kylan mauled his fellow Sophomore from Cathedral.  Then he pinned his opponent from Park Tudor.  In the Championship the #9 ranked wrestler from Lawrence North was too good and Kylan finished second.  Kylan is probably our most improved wrestler this year.  He'll be fun to watch at Regional!  His mother and grandmother were with us in the stands, and it's not hard to see where Kylan got his energy and determination.
Jhonatan Pasten (JR 126 lbs.) - Jhonatan pinned the Freshman from Arlington, then lost to the #8 ranked wrestler from Cathedral.  Undaunted, Jhonatan regrouped and defeated Lawrence North and Brebeuf to finish third.  Again ... What a fighter!
Michel (Heart Attack) Vaulx (JR 132 lbs.) - In his first match Michel fought hard all six minutes, but the Cathedral wrestler prevailed.  Mad as ... heck, Michel pinned Chatard and pinned Lawrence North to finish third.  Michel at Regional will be exciting to watch!
Manuel Nieves (JR 138 lbs.) - Manuel fought hard but had a tough day.  We'll miss him at Regional.  With hard work and more experience, we'll see Manuel at Regional next year!
Peter Nickelsberg (JR 145 lbs.) - Peter pinned a tough Senior Chatard opponent in Round 1.  Then he wrestled hard for six minutes against the #17 ranked wrestler from Lawrence Central (the eventual Champion), and lost by four points.  Peter then dominated his opponent from Arlington and faced a good Lawrence North wrestler for third.  The LN wrestler is the son of NC's ROTC Colonel Reed.  The Colonel's kid wrestled great and Peter finished fourth.  If it wasn't for Michel, Peter would be (Heart Attack) Nickelsberg!
Javier (The Wrestler) Reyes (JR 170 lbs.) - Upset in Round 1 by Cathedral, Javier came back with an amazing pin of Chatard.  Wrestling for third against Lawrence Central, Javier fought hard the whole match but finished fourth.  We could tell Javier has not fully recovered from a shoulder injury that kept him out of last week's MIC Tournament.  If we can find Mr. Miyagi to treat Javier's shoulder, his first round match at Regional should be exciting!
Seth (The Surgeon) Issacs (JR 182 lbs.) - Sectional Champion!!  Look out Regional!
Preston (The Man) Daniels (SR 195 lbs.) - Preston pinned Chatard and fought hard for six minutes in a loss to Cathedral.  Preston then came back to pin Brebeuf, but lost by one point to Lawrence North and finished fourth.  Wrestling with a "bum" shoulder all year, Preston has been courageous.  He is a very good wrestler, and his first round match at Regional should be exciting!
Trevon (Crusher) Williams (SR 220 lbs.) - Brebeuf and Arlington were no challenge for Trevon (pins).  Then he faced the #8 ranked wrestler from Lawrence Central in the Finals.  A penalty point for a Full-Nelson resulted in a one-point loss for Trevon.  I had an excellent view of the match, and there was no penalty.  And who is this "Nelson" guy??  Regardless, Trevon will be a force at Regional, and I hope to see a re-match!!
Mitchell Kessler (SO 285 lbs.) - Mitchell fought hard for six minutes but lost to a "huge" Lawrence Central wrestler.  Determined to advance to Regional, Mitchell pinned Lawrence North.  In a monumental battle for third, Mitchell was one-point short and finished fourth.  Heavyweight ranges from 221 lbs. to 285 lbs.  It's the weight class where almost anything can and often does happen.  Wrestle smart, don't let anybody fall on you, and ...
Moving Sectional to Arlington:
A couple first-time problems, but overall a great success!
Instead of being relegated to the nose-bleed section at Lawrence Central, the fans were at floor level.  Being close to the action was wonderful!
And it was great to see Arlington again!
NC Coach Will Clarke's father, Jack, was on Arlington's State Champion team in 1965 and finished 2nd at 145 lbs.  We all saw his name up on the wall of the gym and thought that was great!!
On to Regional:
So now it's on to Regional at Pendleton Heights, February 2nd, 9:00 AM.
Pendleton Heights is a great school with a rich wrestling tradition.  Over the years all their folk have been excellent hosts.
I can't wait to see the brackets.
So you-all come and join in the fun!!
