ANDERSON, Ind. — Mother Nature struck again Thursday, causing Lapel’s and Anderson’s boys tennis teams to change venues in the middle of their sectional match.
After all was said and done, Anderson swept Lapel 5-0 to advance to today’s semifinals.
The Indians and Bulldogs were able to get both doubles and one singles match complete before the rain soaked the courts at Highland Junior High School.
Anderson’s No. 1 doubles team of Bobby Moran and Drew Hueston defeated Kyle Flowers and Brenden Mudd 6-1, 6-2.
Anderson’s No. 2 doubles team of Brady Reed and Jerome Follmal followed suit and beat Brady Cherry and Chase Kimmerling 6-2, 6-4.
No. 2 singles player Rishi Patell of Anderson defeated Lapel’s Damon Badenhorn 6-2, 6-1.
When the rain came, the teams moved to the Anderson Sports Center to finish out the sectional match.
“You can’t control these situations,” Anderson coach Jim Hostetler said. “You just have to go with the flow. I told the kids to not let this get to them.”
Anderson’s Bret Ellis defeated Matt Conrad in a battle of the No.1 singles 7-5, 7-5.
Ellis was able to avenge his defeat earlier in the season against Conrad.
Indians No. 3 singles plater Brady Colip defeated Jake Huntzinger 2-6, 6-0, 1-0 to finish out the sectional.
That match was cut short in the final set since Anderson already had the win locked up.
Anderson was supposed to follow this match with a showdown with Elwood, but the sectional semifinal was postponed to 4:30 p.m. today.
“We feel like we have a good shot to win tomorrow,” Hostetler said. “We defeated them 5-0 in the season, and we are a very strong team.”
Rain also affected play at Alexandria where Pendleton Heights was scheduled to meet Frankton in the sectional’s other semifinal match.
The Arabians and Eagles got only through their warm-ups before the weather forced their match to be postponed.
It also was rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. today.
Weather permitting, the sectional final will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. at Highland between the winners of today’s matches.
