The No. 1 seed in the Region V volleyball tournament came back from a two-game deficit to down upstart West Texas 23-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-6 in Saturday’s opening match at Cahoon Armory on the NMMI campus.
For the first two games, it looked like an upset was in the cards, and the first three games were tight, down-to-the-wire affairs
Game 1 saw 13 ties and several lead changes, with the Westerners going up for good at 18-15, then holding off the Wranglers for the remainder of the game.
Game 2 was very similar. It was back and forth until WTC took a 12-8 lead on a tip and ace by Brooke Bloomfield. Odessa battled back, tying it at 18-all and holding the lead — or a share of it — through 23-23. But a Wrangler hitting error and Westerner kill gave West Texas the victory.
Game 3 was more of the same, with solid kills on both sides — Moana Moe and Susanne Lotz led the Westerners; Jackie Bautista and Alexx Thornton Odessa— good serving — Wrangler Carisa Gutierrez had an ace — and outstanding blocking by Odessa. In the end, West Texas couldn’t overcome a 22-20 edge by Odessa, with the Wranglers winning on a block.
That seemed to fire up the district co-champs, as they never trailed in Game 4 — WTC tied only three times — and went up 6-1 in Game 5, using a tip to get the game and match victory.
That win sends Odessa into the 4 p.m. championship match vs. the winner of the NMMI-Frank Phillips semi-final match.
