The second game in the Region V volleyball tournament Friday showed just how close the WJCAC is, as No. 3 Frank Phillips and No. 6 Clarendon fought to the wire, with the Plainsmen topping the Bulldogs 25-21, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22.
Game 1 saw five ties, the last at 21-all, with FPC pulling it out on three unanswered serves by Zoe Baker.
Clarendon dominated Game 2, leading by as many as nine points before the Plainsmen closed the gap. But kills by Penny Holdren helped save the victory. The Bulldogs led early in Game 3 before Frank Phillips tied it at 12-12. Clarendon came back at 15-15 but the Plainsmen held on for the final 10 points.
Game 4 saw FPC go up early and the ‘Dogs battle back. After tying it at 10-all, Clarendon went up 16-12 before solid kills by Hunter Lenz handcuffed Clarendon. Despite ties at 20- and 21-all, the Plainsmen held on for the game and match victory.
Frank Phillips will go on to face host NMMI Saturday at noon at Cahoon Armory in the semifinal tournament match.
