Western Texas College and Midland College opened up the Region V volleyball tournament at Cahoon Armory at NMMI Friday with an exciting four-game match that the Westerners won 17-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18.
Game 1 belonged to the Chaparrals, as they only trailed 1-0 on the opening serve, and stretched the lead to eight points before getting the final point on a kill.
Game 2 started the same way the opener ended: with Midland leading from the first serve. But trailing 21-17, West Texas began a comeback, tying the game at 21-all on strong serves by Moana Moe and getting the win on a kill by Susanne Lotz.
Scorewise, Games 3 and 4 were all Westerners, as a 3-3 tie was as close as Midland could get. But the Chaps never gave up, fighting back from a 19-10 deficit to close the game to 24-18 before a Lotz kill closed out the game and match.
The victory moves West Texas into the semifinal game vs. No. 1 seed Odessa at 10 a.m. Saturday.
