NJCAA Fall Sport Players of the Week Selections (10/19/2011)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The following are this week’s NJCAA Player of the Week selections for football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball. For more information visit www.njcaa.org.

NJCAA Football Players of the Week - Oct. 19, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Johnell Wortham (Northland CTC, Minn.), Theodore Jackson IV (Northwest Mississippi CC) and De’Joshua Johnson (Arizona Western College) have been named NJCAA Football Players of the Week for games Oct. 13 through Oct. 16.

Wortham earned Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Jackson was Defensive Player of the Week and Johnson was selected Special Teams Player of the Week.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Johnell Wortham, Northland Community & Technical College, Minn.
Running Back; St. Rose, La.; Destrehan High School

Wortham (6’ 1” / 200 lbs.) put the Pioneers on his back and carried them to a 35-25 win over Itasca CC (Minn.). The sophomore carried the ball 14 times for 294 yards and four touchdowns. Wortham scored another touchdown on one of his seven receptions in the game. Accounting for 389 all-purpose yards, Wortham averaged 21 yards per carry and 13.6 yards per catch. Northland will need another strong performance from Wortham Thursday when they play at Mesabi Range CTC, Minn. for the MCAC North Division title.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK  
Theodore Jackson IV, Northwest Mississippi Community College
Defensive End; Tampa, Fla.; Armwood High School

In a 37-0 shutout of Mississippi Delta CC, Jackson (6’ 2” / 225 lbs.) recorded six solo tackles and assisted on another. Sacking the quarterback twice, Jackson also had 2.5 tackles for loss in the victory. Jackson will look to continue getting into the backfield Saturday when the Rangers host Holmes CC (Miss.).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
De’Joshua Johnson, Arizona Western College
Wide Receiver/Punt Returner; Pahokee, Fla.; Pahokee High School

For the second time this season, Johnson (5’ 11”/175 lbs.) was selected Special Teams Player of the Week. Also for the second time this season, Johnson returned two punts for touchdowns. In a 76-6 beat down of Green River Prep, the first-year wide receiver took punts 95 and 57 yards to pay dirt. Facing stiffer competition this week, Johnson and the No. 2 Matadors travel to No. 18 Glendale CC (Ariz.). 

NJCAA Men's Soccer Players of the Week - Oct. 19, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Alberto Checa (Dodge City CC, Kan.) and John Denton (Northwest Mississippi CC) have been named NJCAA Men’s Soccer Players of the Week for games Oct. 10 through Oct. 16.

In Division I, Checa was Player of the Week and Denton was Goalie of the Week. 

DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Alberto Checa, Dodge City Community College, Kan.
Forward; Sunny Isle Beach, Fla.; Krop High School

Checa (5’ 7”) led the Conquistadors to four victories in all four games last week. The sophomore scored two goals in three games and added two assists against Hesston (Kan.) and another assist against Independence CC (Kan.). Dodge City and Checa will play their regular season finale Wednesday at home against Johnson County CC (Kan.).

DIVISION I GOALIE OF THE WEEK
John Denton, Northwest Mississippi Community College
Ecru, Miss.; North Pontotoc High School

Denton earned Goalie of the Week for the third time this season. The Rangers were unable to score a goal in either of their two games last week but Denton made up for it, forcing 0-0 ties in both affairs. The freshman recorded eight saves in both games, improving his season record to 5-6-3. Denton and Northwest Mississippi close out their regular season Wednesday versus Hinds CC (Miss.) before the MACJC Tournament this weekend.

NJCAA Women's Soccer Players of the Week - Oct. 19, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Lety Ibarra (Dodge City CC, Kan.), Hattie Ruch (USC Lancaster, S.C.) and Morgan Kiernan (Jefferson CC, N.Y.) have been named NJCAA Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for games Oct. 10 through Oct. 16.

In Division I, Ibarra was named Player of the Week and Ruch was selected Goalie of the Week. Kiernan was Player of the Week in Division III. 

DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lety Ibarra, Dodge City Community College, Kan.
Forward; Las Vegas, Nev.; Bonanza High School

Ibarra (5’ 8”) spurred the Conquistadors on to three wins in their four games last week. In a 10-1 blowout of Independence CC (Kan.), Ibarra racked up five goals and added an assist for good measure. The freshman totaled eight goals and one assist for 17 points on the week. Dodge City and Ibarra host Johnson County CC (Kan.) in their final regular season game.

DIVISION I GOALIE OF THE WEEK
Hattie Ruch, USC Lancaster, S.C.
Fort Mill, S.C.; Fort Mill High School 

Ruch (5’ 7”) had a perfect week for the Lancers who won both of their games. In a 4-0 win over Tri-County TC (S.C.), Ruch denied all five shots at her goal. The freshman came back two days later and saved all 11 shots on goal in a 2-0 win over USC Salkehatchie. USC Lancaster hosts Louisburg College (N.C.) Wednesday and Wake Tech Saturday in the regular season finale.

DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK  
Morgan Kiernan, Jefferson Community College, N.Y.
Forward; Copenhagen, N.Y.; Copenhagen Central High School

Kiernan (5’ 6”) led the Cannoneers to a 7-1 win over North Country CC (N.Y.) and a 4-0 victory over Clinton CC (N.Y.) last week. The freshman scored two goals on North Country and recorded a hat-trick with three goals against Clinton. Jefferson and Kiernan finished their regular season with a 4-0 defeat at No. 2 Finger Lakes CC (N.Y.) Tuesday.

DIVISION III GOALIE OF THE WEEK  
No goalies were nominated in Division III.

NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week - Oct. 19, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Dragana Cvoric (Midland College, Texas), Tiffany Borgerding (East Central College, Mo.) and Andraia Leja (Harper College, Ill.) have been named NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week for games Oct. 10 through Oct. 16.

Cvoric was named Player of the Week in Division I. Division II honors went to Borgerding, while Leja was Division III Player of the Week.

DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Dragana Cvoric, Midland College, Texas
Outside Hitter; Guca, Serbia; Dragacevo Guca

Cvoric (6’ 0”) put together two commendable all-around performances in the Chaparrals’ two victories last week. The freshman recorded double-doubles in both games with 15 kills and 22 digs against Western Texas College and 17 kills and 20 digs in a win over Frank Phillips College (Texas). Cvoric and Midland host Odessa College Wednesday and will be at No. 20 New Mexico Military Institute on Saturday.

DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK  
Tiffany Borgerding, East Central College, Mo.
Outside Hitter; Dutzow, Mo.; Washington High School

Borgerding (5’ 11”) was all over the court last week as the Falcons went 4-1 in five matches. Averaging 3.88 kills per set, Borgerding tallied two 15-kill performances in sweeps of Neosho County CC (Kan.) and Kansas City Kansas CC. The sophomore had three double-doubles and totaled 16 blocks and 11 aces in East Central’s five matches. Borgerding and the No. 16 Falcons host Division I Mineral Area College (Mo.) Wednesday before participating in the Illinois Central Tournament Friday and Saturday.

DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Andraia Leja, Harper College, Ill.
Libero; Cary, Ill.; Prairie Ridge High School

Leja (5’ 4”) backed the Hawks to a 5-2 record last week including victories over three opponents from Division II and two ranked teams. The freshman’s top showing was 39 digs in a five-set loss to Carl Sandberg College (Ill.). Displaying her deadly serving ability, Leja recorded 18 aces, averaging 0.62 per set. No. 9 Harper and Leja host Madison College (Wisc.) Thursday before their season finale against Division II Kankakee CC (Ill.) Saturday.
