NJCAA Fall Sport Players of the Week Selections (9/14/2011)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The following are this week’s NJCAA Player of the Week selections for football, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball. For more information visit www.njcaa.org.

NJCAA Football Players of the Week – Sept. 14, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Bobby Vega (College of DuPage, Ill.), Fidel Montgomery (Southwest Mississippi CC) and De’Joshua Johnson (Arizona Western College) have been named NJCAA Football Players of the Week for games Sept. 8 through Sept. 10.

Vega was named Offensive Player of the Week, while the Defensive Player of the Week was Montgomery. Johnson took home Special Teams Player of the Week honors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Bobby Vega, College of DuPage, Ill.
Quarterback; Miami, Fla.; Varela High School

Vega (6’ 2” / 220 lbs.) torched the Iowa Central CC defense for 514 passing yards and threw for four touchdowns. Trailing 35-7 at the half, Vega led the Chaparrals to 35 unanswered points for a 42-35 victory and their first 3-0 start since 1995. The sophomore set school-records for passing yards, completions (38) and pass attempts (48). Vega will lead DuPage into one of the biggest games of the season as the Chaparrals host undefeated No. 6 Iowa Western CC.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK  
Fidel Montgomery, Southwest Mississippi Community College
Defensive Back; Marianna, Fla.; Marianna High School

Montgomery (5’ 11” / 179 lbs.) put forth an inspirational effort last Thursday but the Bears fell short in a 32-9 loss at Northeast Mississippi CC. The defensive back tallied 18 solo tackles and 28 total. Montgomery also forced three Northeast fumbles. The Bears and Montgomery will stay on the road this Thursday as they head to No. 15 Pearl River CC (Miss.).

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
De’Joshua Johnson, Arizona Western College
Wide Receiver/Punt Returner; Pahokee, Fla.; Pahokee High School

Johnson (5’ 11” / 175 lbs.) was responsible for 12 of Arizona Western’s points in a 42-0 win over Mesa CC (Ariz.) last Saturday. In his first season with the Matadors, Johnson scored two touchdowns on punt returns of 52 and 72 yards. In the fourth quarter, Johnson took another punt across the goal line from 90 yards out but it was negated by a penalty. Johnson and the No. 3 Matadors will try to stay undefeated this week when Phoenix College (Ariz.) comes to town.

NJCAA Men’s Soccer Players of the Week – Sept. 14, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – JaCoby Smith (Ancilla College, Ind.), Victor Lozano (Prairie State College, Ill.) and Gilbert Ghong (Century College, Minn.) have been named NJCAA Men’s Soccer Players of the Week for games Sept. 5 through Sept. 11.

In Division I, Smith was elected Player of the Week and Lozano was named Goalie of the Week. Ghong claimed Player of the Week for Division III.

DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JaCoby Smith, Ancilla College, Ind.
Striker; Marion, Ind.; Marion High School

Smith (6’ 0”) put together an impressive weekend performance with hat-tricks in back-to-back days for the Chargers. The freshman started off Saturday with three goals and an assist in a 6-0 win over Lakeland CC (Ohio). Smith then duplicated his performance Sunday with three goals and an assist in an 8-0 victory over Cuyahoga CC (Ohio). Ancilla went 2-0 in the Lakeland CC Tournament and will stay on the road this week for matches at Owens CC (Ohio) and No. 13 Cincinnati State TCC (Ohio).

DIVISION I GOALIE OF THE WEEK
Victor Lozano, Prairie State College, Ill.
East Chicago, Ind.; East Chicago Central High School

Lozano (5’ 9”) led the Pioneers to two victories last week with tremendous performances in the net. The freshman saved all five shots that came his way in a 2-0 win over Waubonsee CC (Ill.). In the second game of the week, Lozano improved his 2011 record to 5-1 by saving three of five shots on goal and beating Malcolm X College (Ill.) 12-2. Lozano will be back in the net this week at No. 18 College of DuPage (Ill.).

DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Gilbert Ghong, Century College, Minn.
Midfielder; Bamenda, Cameroon; Harmony Learning Center

Ghong (5’ 8”) led the Mighty Wood Ducks to their first victory of the 2011 season. Defeating Hibbing CC (Minn.) 9-0, the freshman tallied three assists and one goal for five points in the match. The Cameroonian will try to lead Century to more wins this week as they play host to the University of Minnesota and College of St. Scholastica (Minn.).

DIVISION III GOALIE OF THE WEEK
There were no goalies nominated in Division III

NJCAA Women’s Soccer Players of the Week – Sept. 14, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Melissa Heatherington (Hutchinson CC, Kan.), Emma Crenshaw (Johnson CCC, Kan.) and Katrina Harrington (Brookhaven College, Texas) have been named NJCAA Women’s Soccer Players of the Week for games Sept. 5 through Sept. 11.

Heatherington was selected Player of the Week and Crenshaw was named Goalie of the Week for Division I. In Division II, Harrington garnered Player of the Week honors.

DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Melissa Heatherington, Hutchinson Community College, Kan.
Forward; Burnley, England

Heatherington (5’ 7”) rewrote the Blue Dragon’s record books Wednesday, breaking two school records and tying two more in route to a 12-0 win over Pratt CC (Kan.). The freshman set single-game records for goals with six and points with 12. Heatherington tied the school records for goals in a half with five and points in a half with 10. Hutchinson will look for their young forward to keep up the pace Wednesday when they host Northern Oklahoma College – Tonkawa.

DIVISION I GOALIE OF THE WEEK
Emma Crenshaw, Johnson County Community College, Kan.
Overland Park, Kan.; Blue Valley West High School

Crenshaw (5’7”) received Goalie of the Week honors for the second consecutive week after shutting out two opponents. The freshman saved the one opposing shot in an 11-0 win over Independence CC (Kan.). A 2-0 win over Southwestern Illinois required more effort as Crenshaw turned away all five shots sent at the Cavaliers’ goal. Crenshaw will defend her 2-0-2 record this week against Garden City CC (Kan.) and Dakota CTC (Minn.).

DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK  
Katrina Harrington, Brookhaven College, Texas
Forward; Prescott, Ariz.; Prescott High School

Harrington (5’ 9”) led the Bears to a 5-2 win over Division I opponent Lon Morris College (Texas). Connecting on 60 percent of her shots, the forward scored three of Brookhaven’s five goals. Harrington also added an assist to her stat sheet and finished the match with seven points. Thursday the Bears and Harrington will host cross-town rival Cedar Valley College (Texas).

DIVISION III GOALIE OF THE WEEK
There were no goalies nominated in Division III

NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week - Sept. 14, 2011

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Marifranchi Rodriguez (Miami Dade College, Fla.) and Lisa Angello (Kansas City – Kansas CC) have been named NJCAA Volleyball Players of the Week for games Sept. 5 through Sept. 11.

Rodriguez was selected Player of the Week for Division I, while Angello was named Player of the Week for Division II.

DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Marifranchi Rodriguez, Miami Dade College, Fla.
Middle Blocker; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Espiritu Santo

Rodriguez (6’ 3”) got off to a quick start to the 2011 season with double-double performances in her first two matches. The sophomore middle blocker registered 18 kills and 11 blocks in the season-opener, leading the Lady Sharks to a three-set sweep of Indian River State (Fla.). Rodriguez followed up with 21 kills and 12 digs in a sweeping victory over Palm Beach State (Fla.). The Dominican also recorded four blocks and three aces in each match. Rodriguez and the Lady Sharks kick the season into high-gear this week with five matches on tap.

DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK 
Lisa Angello, Kansas City – Kansas Community College
Outside Hitter; Lansing, Kan.; Lansing High School

Angello (5’ 8”) used her all-around talent to lead the Blue Devils to a 4-1 record last week. Defensively, the freshman tallied 63 digs in the five matches including a season-high 16 in a three-set sweep of Allen County CC (Kan.). Angello scored 42 kills and had a double-double against Neosho County CC (Kan.) with 13 kills and 12 digs. This week, Angello and KCKCC will face two conference opponents before heading to the Kishwaukee Tournament in Malta, Ill.

DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK
There were no players nominated in Division III.
