Tough loss for Lady Rams
February 27, 2014By David Alexander of Newton High School
The Newton Lady Rams Varsity Soccer team played all out in a hard fought match last night, losing to the Morgan County High Bulldogs by a score of 3-1. The Lady Bulldogs mounted an early offensive attack that was buffered by great defensive play from Alex Lewis and Tory Burgess who both would clear the penalty box as balls were shot their way. But the Bulldogs persisted and scored a goal with twelve minutes left in the half taking a 1-0 lead which stood until the half.
Under the watchful eye of Coach Jesse Macias, the Rams regrouped and kicked off the second half. The Rams made several impressive pushes up the field but a strong Bulldog defense kept them from getting any meaningful shots on goal. With almost 20 minutes gone in the second half, the Lady Bulldogs pressed and scored again. But the Lady Rams did not give up, and continued to press the ball upfield. After a Bulldog foul, field Captain Lacey Brackett set up for a direct free kick from about 30 yards from the goal. She made her run and kicked a perfectly placed ball right under the bar, cutting Morgan County's lead in half and a 2-1 score.
With time running out, the lady Bulldogs mounted a fierce offensive attack, shootting on goalkeeper Cheyenne Walsingham a half dozen times to no avail. The Rams remained determined and continued to play great defense. But, with congestion in the penalty box, and mere seconds left, the bulldogs kicked one through right at the whistle for a 3-1 finish.
