Home » General NewsNewton Boys' Hoops team wins 5 straightJanuary 31, 2013 Newton High SchoolThe Rams varsity boys' basketball team has won 5 staight and has surged to only one game out of first in Region 2-AAAAAA with a record on 15-7 (5-4). The Rams started the season 10-3 (1-1) then dropped a rare four in a row for only the second time in head coach Rick Rasmussen's eight year tenure to move to 10-7 (1-4). With a fairly inexperienced team, returning only two starters, and losing their top 3 scorers from last season, including Stephen Croone, who starts at Div 1 Furman, and Shane Henry who starts at Georgia Perimeter College, Newton has taken some time to jell, but with this current run of five straight wins, it appears the Rams are back to their old ways and the familiar territory of the top of Region 2. Several factors have contributed to the Rams recent success, including the strong play of several key players, but the biggest factors are the Rams improved decision-making on offense and their return to the fundmentals and discipline and team defense that are their trademarks. The Rams appear poised to make a run to the top of the region at just the right time, as the Region 2-AAAAAA at Luella is just a week and a half away. Let's do this Rams. Keep up the good work.
