Rams fair well in Alabama, move to 10-3 overall
December 30, 2012Newton High School
Over Christmas break, the Newton Rams varsity boys' basketball team dropped its opening game to the #1 team in AL in AAAA in Dallas County 32-34 then rebounded to win two close games over Ravenwood, TN and Gardendale, AL to finish strong at the Yule Tide Classic at Wallace State CC in Hanceville, Alabama and move to 10-3 (1-1) overall on the season. The Yule Tide Classic boasted 5 ranked teams, so competition was stout and wins did not come easily for anyone.
In the first game, the Rams had their worst shooting night of the season vs. Dallas Co, as there seemed to be a lid on the rim. The Rams appeared to be the better team, but had 6 lay-ups roll off the front of the rim in a nailbitter that came down to the wire. The Rams shut down Dallas's leader scorer Markell Harris, holding him to 6 points, after having 25 and 21 in the two previous games, including a Dallas County win 72-50 over Wilcox Central, the previous #1 AAAA team in Alabama. Newton also held down Dallas's 6'8 center William Lee, who holds offers from UGA, Auburn, and Alabama. Unfortunately the Rams struggled offensively, as Dallas' height made it tough to finish inside. Newton's Jalen Glover had 13 points in the effort.
In the second game, the Rams bounced back to hold off a solid Ravenwood, TN team from Brentwood, who had a 6'7 center and two college prospects at guard. Despite Ravenwood's hot shooting, the Rams leaned on forward Rashard Cabane, who had a career night going 12/13 from the FT line and finishing with 22 points and 14 rebounds.
In the final game, the Rams won their 6th of their last 8 games, outlasting AAAAAA Gardendale, AL. The Rams led by double figures on two different occasions but could not put away Gardendale til the very end. The Rams led by 15 at one point but held on for a 54-51 lead. Taylor Hawkins led the way for the Rams off the bench, and Rodarious Mitchell had 11. Rashard Cabane had 10 points in the effort and was named to the Yule Tide Classic at Wallace State all-tournament team.
The Rams look to keep their momentum going when they host the Luella Lions in region action on Jan. 4th at 8:30 pm before they visit rival Eastside on Jan. 5th at 4 pm.
