May 30, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
A nine-run second inning propelled the New Palestine baseball team to a 10-0, five-inning victory over Chatard in Thursday's sectional.
The Dragons (19-9) advance to play Guerin Catholic in Saturday's 11 a.m. semifinal. Brebeuf and Howe will play in the other semi.
Freshman Keegan Watson had the big blow of the second inning, a three-run homer that broke the game open. He added a solo homer in the fourth that set the final margin.
The second inning was a parade of hits, as the Dragons sent 15 batters to the plate. In addition to Watson's three-run homer, Steven Clark, Cameron Clark, Nick Butcher and Evan Hickman all drove in runs in the inning.
Cameron Clark and Logan Gilvin had two hits each to join Watson's two homers in leading an 11-hit attack. Connor Swain, Tyler Woodcock, Steven Clark, Butcher and Jason Hall-Manley all had a single and a run each.
Evan Vance (5-3) threw a one-hit shutout, facing 18 total batters -- three more than the minimum. He struck out three batters. He has now won three of his last four starts, and threw his second complete-game shutout of the season.
