BA: Dragons split with MV, finish 3rd in HHC

The New Palestine baseball team registered a doubleheader split with Mt. Vernon, earning third place in the HHC.

The Dragons dropped the opener 5-3, then got a 12-strikeout performance from Cameron Clark in a 5-2 nightcap win.

NP finished the regular season with an 18-9 record, including a 6-6 HHC mark.

In the nightcap, the Dragons got going with a four-run first inning, with Nick Butcher and Cameron Clark leading off with a single and a double. Steven Clark and Keegan Watson followed with run-scoring singles and each would later score -- one on a wild pitch, one on Evan Hickman's RBI groundout. Logan Gilvin also had a hit in the four-run, five-hit first inning.

MV answered with two unearned runs in the second, but Steven Clark's solo homer made it 5-2 and Cameron Clark made it stand up. He fanned six straight batters in the third and fourth innings -- including four strikeouts in the third inning -- and kept rolling. He allowed just one hit and three baserunners in the final five innings.

NP had seven hits. with Butcher's two singles leading the way.

In the opener, the Dragons fell 5-3. NP trailed 3-0 going into the fifth, but tied the game with two outs, when Butcher and Cameron Clark both walked. Connor Swain singled the first run home, and Keegan Watson followed with a two-run single.

MV hit a homer in the bottom of the inning to re-take the lead and added an insurance run in the sixth.

NP had six hits, with Watson going 3-3 with two RBI, and Butcher going 2-2. Swain had the other hit. Evan Vance took the loss, allowing eight hits, four earned runs and striking out three over six innings of work.

The Dragons open sectinoal play Thursday at Chatard against the host school. First pitch is 5 p.m.
