New Palestine exploded in the fifth inning to beat Shelbyville 12-0 and take the Hoosier Heritage Conference softball lead.
Issy Hoyt hit a grand slam to key the nine-run fifth inning that allowed the Dragons to win with the mercy rule.
The fourth-ranked Dragons pounded 13 hits against the Bears. They broke through with three runs in the fourth to break a scoreless tie, and then added nine more.
In addition to her grand slam, Hoyt also hit a double and scored twice. Casey Lehman was 3-4 with an RBI to help pace the attack. Markie Wood was 3-4 with a run and two RBI. Mary Crumlin also had two hits and drove in two runs. Abby O'Connor, Madison Whitaker and Brittany Duncan all each had a hit.
Kaylin McMurray threw a complete-game two-hit shutout, striking out five batters.
The Dragons (13-2, 4-0 HHC) next play Monday at Rushville. The Dragons' victory knocked Shelbyville from the HHC lead, leaving NP and New Castle (1-0) as the lone conference unbeatens. NP has three conference games left - against Greenfield-Central, Delta and New Castle.
