4A No. 5 New Palestine improved to 2-0 in HHC play and won its eighth straight softball game, beating Mt. Vernon 4-1 on the road Thursday afternoon.
The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the opening frame, and never relinquished it, getting solid pitching from starter Kaylin McMurray and reliever Elisha Barker. Markie Wood and Brittany Duncan both reached and scored in the first.
McMurray allowed five hits and one run in 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Barker escaped a bases-loaded threat in the sixth and then held the Marauders off the board in the seventh to get the save.
MV cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, but the Dragons immediately answered, as Duncan singled and Adie Lorsung drove her in with a double. Lorsung took third on the play, and then came home on Casey Lehman's sacrifice fly.
Duncan led the Dragons' seven-hit attack, going 3-4 with a double and two runs. Wood was 2-4 with a double and a run. Lorsung and Mary Crumlin also had hits.
The Dragons are now 10-1 on the season, and visit Eastern Hancock Friday.
