BSW: Gish headed back to State Finals

New Palestine senior Grant Gish is headed to the State Finals for the third straight year after winning the 100 freestyle at Saturday's New Palestine sectional.

Gish swam a 49.46-second time to clinch the sectional title. He was in second place to Connersville's Andrew Bernzott at the turn, but overtook him and the rest of the field with a second leg that was 25.76 seconds - a half-second faster than the field. Gish won by 0.64 seconds over Mt. Vernon's Ethan Park.

Gish was also the runner-up in the 50 freestyle, his 22.86-second time nine tenths back of champion Andrew Bernzott of Connersville.

As a team, New Palestine was fifth with 186 points. Greenfield-Central won the title with 485, ahead of Mt. Vernon (437), Connersville (331) and Richmond (221). New Castle was sixth with 179.

In addition to Gish's first and second place finishes, the Dragons had another top-eight individual finisher, with Conner Page placing sixth in diving with a score of 261.00.

The Dragons also had three relays in the final. Jake Mitchell, Chris Dodd, Kelley Murphy and Parker Horn placed sixth in 1:52.02 in the 200 medley relay. In the 200 free relay, Todd Horn, Gish, Dodd and David Thompson placed fourth in 1:33.54. In the 400 free relay, Gish, Todd Horn, Thompson and Joey Rogers placed fifth in 3:36.64.

The Dragons also had several swimmers in the consolation finals, placing 9-16:
Joey Rogers was 14th in the 200 freestyle (2:06.60).
Luke Reed was 12th (2:20.78) and Kelley Murphy 16th (2:25.78) in the 200 IM.
Todd Horn was 11th in the 50 freestyle (23.97).
Joey Rogers was 12th (1:01.82) and Kelley Murphy 13th (1:02.10) in the 100 butterfly.
Todd Horn was 11th (52.81) and David Thompson 16th (54.28) in the 100 freestyle.
Jake Mitchell was 13th (1:05.17) and David Thompson 16th (1:10.07) in the 100 backstroke
Chris Dodd was ninth (1:07.84), Luke Reed 12th (1:12.01) and Chase Crowder 15th (1:14.41) in the 100 breaststroke.
