BBB: Dragons overwhelm Marauders in 2nd half
February 24, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
Ryan Curry scored 25 points and Seth Cox had 15 after halftime to lead New Palestine to a 68-48 victory over Mt. Vernon.
Both were two points shy of their career highs in the victory, which gave the Dragons a 3-3 mark in HHC play and will allow them to finish potentially as high as third place in the conference.
The Dragons trailed 28-24 at halftime after an 11-2 run by the Marauders fueled by strong 3-point shooting. But Curry exploded early in the second half, breaking a 33-all tie with a four-point play, and the Dragons never looked back from there. That basket ignited a 16-5 run that allowed New Palestine to take its first double-digit lead of the game and the Dragons never looked back.
Cox was equally-impressive inside. After going scoreless in the first half, he scored 15 second-half points, hitting 7-of-10 from the floor. Cox also had a team-high-tying seven rebounds and blocked four shots.
Curry hit 6-of-12 from 3-point range for a season high in 3-pointers made. He was also 7-of-8 from the line, and added two assists, five rebounds and two steals. Senior point guard Samson Haynes also had a solid all-around game with nine points, five assists, six rebounds and two steals. Connor Roach added eight points, tied Cox with seven rebounds, and added three assists and a steal. Brandon Jonas chipped in six points and four boards. As a team, NP hit 22-50 from the floor and 7-17 from 3-point range. The Dragons were also 17-22 from the line. The Dragons held MV to 34 percent shooting (16-46), and outrebounded the Marauders 36-16.
NP is now 9-9 on the year heading into Saturday's Senior Night game against Whiteland (7-12). MV falls to 8-11.
