BBB: Grizzly Cubs down Dragons with 3rd-quarter run

Franklin used a third-quarter run to down the New Palestine Dragons 64-53 Thursday evening.

The Cubs finished the third quarter with a 17-2 run that allowed them to build a 44-29 edge after three quarters. Despite New Palestine hitting seven 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, the Cubs' lead stayed in double-digits the rest of the way.

The teams swapped the lead often in the opening eight minutes, after which they were tied 12-12. Franklin went on an 8-0 run to build a lead to start the second quarter, but the Dragons scored the last five points of the opening half and tied the game at 27-27 on Brandon Jonas' jumper to start the third quarter. However, Franklin held NP without a field goal for the rest of the quarter and pulled away with a run that spanned the last 5:30 of the period.

Ryan Curry got hot, scoring 15 of his game-high 22 points in the fourth. He hit four 3-pointers in the period, as well as drawing a three-shot foul. Curry hit five triples for the game. Kevin Riley hit two of his three 3-pointers in the fourth and scored 10 points. As a team, the Dragons hit a season-high 11 3-pointers, including one each by Connor Roach, Duke Blackwell and Keegan Lytle.

Roach had seven rebounds and two assists to help lead the Dragons. He scored six points. Curry and Blackwell had three assists each. Curry also had five rebounds.

The Dragons shot 38 percent as a team (17-44), but were 11-27 from 3-point range and 8-11 from the line. Franklin was led by Tyler Thomas' 17 points and 15 from guard Nick King. The Grizzly Cubs shot 56 percent from the floor (25-44) and 10-16 from the line.

The Dragons (8-8) next play Saturday afternoon against Connersville. JV game will tip at noon, varsity at 1:30. The game will be broadcast by HancockCountySports.com.

The Dragons won the JV game 34-25.
