BBB: Dragons use size to down Trojans
February 13, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
New Palestine's front line was dominant as the Dragons beat New Castle 51-37 on the road Wednesday night.
The Dragons' three frontline starters combined for 33 points and 21 rebounds in the victory at the New Castle Fieldhouse.
Brandon Jonas had 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, and hit his first 3-pointer of the season, to lead the Dragons in scoring. He also had five rebounds. Connor Roach continued his strong play of late with 11 points, six rebounds and two assists. He has hit 14 of his last 19 field-goal attempts. Seth Cox just missed a double-double, as he tallied eight points and grabbed 11 rebounds. He also had two assists and a team-high three steals.
Samson Haynes had seven points, three assists and four boards, while Ryan Curry scored six points and grabbed seven rebounds.
The 37 points allowed were a season-low for New Palestine's defense, and marked the seventh time in the last nine games NP has held a team to 50 points or less.
New Palestine led 11-9 after a quarter and 20-17 at the half, but held the Trojans to three points in the third quarter -- a season-best defensive output for the Dragons in a quarter -- to build a 29-20 edge after three. NP scored 22 fourth-quarter points to put the game away.
NP shot 40 percent from the floor (16-40) but was 16-27 from the line. The Dragons had a season-low eight turnovers. The Dragons outrebounded New Castle 35-25. NP held the Trojans to just 24 percent shooting (12-49), including 7-31 from 3-point range. NC was 6-8 from the line. Andrew Garrett hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points to lead the Trojans.
New Palestine is now 8-7 on the season and continues its busy week with a Thursday game at Franklin (7:30 varsity tip) and a Saturday home game against Connersville (1:30 varsity tip). Both games will be broadcast by HancockCountySports.com.
The Dragons also won the JV game.
