BSW: Dragons 2nd on Senior NIght
February 11, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
New Palestine recognized its swimming seniors Monday, finishing second in the final boys meet of the regular season.
Pendleton Heights won the meet with 145 points. New Palestine tallied 124 and Hagerstown 37 in the three-way meet at NPHS.
New Palestine recognized its seven swimming seniors -- Carl Baird, Chris Dodd, Grant Gish and Kelley Murphy from the boys team, and Claire Hornsby, Tricia Roberson and Addison Virt from the girls team.
New Palestine's Jake Mitchell, Chris Dodd, Kelley Murphy and Todd Horn won the 200 medley relay.
Todd Horn was also part of two second-place finishes -- in the 100 freestyle and joining Grant Gish, David Thompson and Jake Mitchell on the 400 free relay.
"Todd Horn really looked strong last night, swimming a couple of life-time bests and anchoring a relay with a great finish. I think he'll be one of our guys to surprise other schools at sectional."
Also second were Murphy in the 200 IM, Gish in the 50 freestyle, Conner Page in diving, Mitchell in the 100 backstroke and the 200 medley relay team of Page, Luke Reed, Joey Rogers and Parker Horn.
"This was a 'last chance' meet for some of the guys as final decisions about the sectional line-up were being made," NP coach Steve Maxwell said. "We had some really good performances and it helped to clarify what our sectional will look like."
"It's been a rough winter and our training has been so erratic; but, after seeing how well the girls swam at their sectional last weekend, the guys are optimistic they will do equally as well. We'll put in another week of regular workouts and then begin to rest the boys for sectional."
The New Palestine boys swimming sectional will be held Feb. 20-22.
