WR: Dragons finish 2nd in sectional, send 11 to regional

Eleven New Palestine wrestlers are headed to the regional after the Dragons finished as sectional runners-up to Warren Central Saturday afternoon at Shelbyville.

The Dragons had four sectional champions, with Eugene Starks (113), Chad Red (120), Rylan McCarty (126) and Nick Brickens (160) all winning titles.

WC had 244 points, while the Dragons had 205. Franklin Central (170.5) was third. Greenfield-Central (137) placed fourth in the 10-team event.

Starks (31-3) won his first match in 1:43, then had a 17-1 technical fall in the semis. He beat Warren Central's Erik Owens 5-4 in the championship match. A

t 120, Red only wrestled twice, and both matches ended early. He won his first match by forfeit, then a 20-5 technical fall over Greenfield-Central's Taylor Wright, and followed with a 5:04 fall over Matthew McKinney of Warren Central in the final.

McCarty (32-4) won with a 1:55 fall, a 9-1 major decision in the semis, then beat Warren Central's Joel McGhee 1-0 in the final.

At 160, Brickens (17-4) had two falls -- including an 11-second pin in the quarterfinals and a 1:27 pin of Franklin Central's DeRon Young in the final. He got to the championship match with a 5-4 double-overtime win over Anthony Bear of Triton Central.

The Dragons also had two runners-up -- Brian Wagner was second at 195, who dropped a 3-1 decision in the final to WC's Kantrell Moss after winning his first three matches. At 285, Andrew Yazel got to the finals with a forfeit, a fall and a 5-1 decision, before falling by fall to Greenfield-Central's Tyler Beeson in the championship match.

Also advancing for the Dragons was third-place finisher Alec White (106) and fourth-place finishers Jared Timberman (132), Jalyn Wallace (138), Sam Weber (182) and Noah Grable (220) .

The Dragons will compete in next Saturday's Perry Meridian regional.
