GBB: Bears end Dragons' streak
January 30, 2014By Andrew Smith of New Palestine High School
New Palestine's bid for its first four-game winning streak in five years fell short Wednesday evening at Lawrence Central, as the host Bears rallied to beat the Dragons 46-38.
NP led from the opening tip until the last 5:15 of the game, holding their third straight opponent to a two-point first quarter and leading 9-2 early. LC tied the game once in the second quarter, but the Bears used a 9-0 fourth-quarter burst to turn a three-point NP lead into a 36-30 LC advantage, and the Dragons never could cut the deficit closer than five from there.
Natalie Kehrt led the Dragons with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and one steal. She knocked down two 3-pointers, including a banked-in triple in the third quarter that helped NP build a 25-19 lead. Haley Stratman scored seven points and had four rebounds. Emma Laughlin had six points and three assists. Gia Nitschke and Mary Crumlin had four points each. Katlyn Keele added five rebounds and a steal.
The Dragons had a season-low nine turnovers in the game.
LC used a hot-shooting second half -- after missing its first 13 shots, the Bears shot 52 percent from the floor (10-19) in the second half to rally, while the Dragons shot 26 percent in the second half and 32 percent for the game. The Bears also outrebounded the Dragons 38-27.
Tajhanae Gillard scored 20 points for LC on 9-of-11 shooting and added eight boards. She had 16 of her taem's first 20 points in the second half.
The Dragons are now 8-9 on the season. They next play Saturday morning at Greenwood. JV tip is 11 a.m., varsity tip 12:30 p.m.
